Weird Low Estrogen Problem?

Possibly relevant background: 26-years-old, nulliparous, been on HBC (alternating POPs and combined pills) continously for about 6 years, diabetic, and have periodically gotten yeast infections for the last 4 years that have occasionally been confirmed by MDs but usually not as I am deathly allergic to most antifungals and must treat with alternative methods anyway.  I'm hoping to get a second opinion from another doctor on this problem but I want to make sure I understand what's going on before I go ask more questions.

About 6 weeks ago I got another yeast infection (I thought).  After my usual remedies failed and I was completely miserable, I finally went to a OB GYN.  She was a little scattered and I feel like I missed some information.  She took a swab and saw "a little" yeast, but noted that there were abnormal amounts of some sort of cell that she described as "very young" which she said indicated I had low levels of estrogen.  She said this was caused by my HBC but didn't indicate anything bad with my body or natural hormone levels.  She prescribed me an estrogen ring to use vaginally and said my next GYN would probably think this made no sense which seemed like a red flag, except the ring seems to have entirely cleared up the problem in just a few days.  I've been trying to research this problem further but my searches are getting bogged down by info on menopause and the fact that I think I missed some key information during my appointment.

Is anyone familiar with this problem?  Can you tell me what sort of cells my GYN was talking about that would indicate I had low estrogen?  I'm also concerned about what this means for my natural hormone levels and if this is something I should be concerned about.
