Experience with Nexplanon

Hello!

I'd posted here a few times before asking about Nexplanon and preparing for it and well, I finally got it! I thought I'd share my experience with it as I haven't seen too many posts in relation to it.

I had my yearly PAP appointment on December 17th and was able to schedule my Nexplanon insertion on the 20th. This was great timing as they prefer you to be bleeding when they insert it and I was just coming off of my last pack of pills in my yearly prescription.

When I got to my insertion appointment, I was taken to a small procedure room. My doctor measured and marked the injection site and injected some numbing solution (which only burned a little, most painful part of the whole thing). She then took the Nexplanon applicator (which has a somewhat large needle), inserted it and it was over in seconds! I couldn't feel a thing. Her assistant then placed a pressure wrap on my arm to prevent bruising and I was sent on my way.

My arm was pretty tender for a day or so and had some GNARLY bruising (which I thought was kind of cool). It bled enough in the first day that once I removed the pressure wrap (after 24 hours), I needed to change the bandaid. I kept a bandaid on it for about 4 days to ensure nothing icky got into the tiny wound. The wound itself was about 1cm in diameter. It never hindered me from doing anything. I was an assistant photographer at a wedding the day after insertion and I was totally fine. After 3.5 weeks, it's just a teeeeeeny little scar, about as noticeable as a freckle. If you look real hard, you can see the light outline of the Nexplanon, but it's nothing that stands out.

As far as side effects, the only thing that really stood out to me was mood swings and irritability. For about two weeks, I felt really out of control with my emotions. A simple misread text from my fiance would turn me to tears. It made me blow a lot of situations out of proportion. I got really scared that this wasn't going to go away, especially as my moodiness was starting to affect my relationship. However, about a week and a half ago, I suddenly just felt better. I woke up one day and felt like I could breath again and I felt a huge sensation of relief. I know it was just my body adjusting to the different hormones from the pill. I'm still feeling totally back to myself from those two weeks of anxiety and irritability.

I haven't had any bouts of weird bleeding, really. A little bit of spotting here and there, mostly after I've had sex, but nothing that's not gone in a few hours. I'm in the habit of just quick popping in my Diva Cup after sex and leaving it in til the next morning.

All in all, I'm really happy with it so far. It's great to not have to worry about taking a pill every day and worrying about prescriptions and paying for those every month. I was really lucky and my insurance covered 100% of it, insertion included. I would definitely recommend it if you're looking for something more long term.

Thanks for reading!
