Links Round Up: Week Ending 13 September 2013

Hi all! Welcome to the latest edition of our Links Round Up.

For folks who don't know, the LRU is a compilation of items from the past week that may be of interest to VPers and is intended to broaden the kinds of conversations we have here.

To submit articles for next week's round-up, e-mail vpteam@vaginapagina.com. If you have additional articles you'd like folks to know about this week, feel free to comment directly to this post.

As a reminder, in lieu of trigger warnings, I use keywords describing the themes of the piece. Please skim these before deciding to read the excerpt or click through for the full article. Outside sources are not safe spaces, and mainstream source's comments should almost always be avoided. The links I highlight don't necessarily reflect VP's views, or even my own, for that matter.

This week's round-up includes: anger, HIV vaccine science, and suicide and weight stigma.

It's a short round up this week, so be sure to leave your own links in the comments!

  1. On Anger by A. Lynn at Nerdy Feminist (Keywords: anger, privilege, marginalization, education)
The stereotype of the angry oppressed person runs rampant. Angry feminists. Angry gay/trans people. Angry people of color. Chances are, if you've ever spoken out about a social issue, you've experienced tone policing and had your entire viewpoint dismissed because of your anger--whether than anger was real or just perceived on the part of the listener/reader. These same people offer their sage advice that others would listen to you if you were nicer, that you'd "catch more flies with honey," and that the oppressors can't learn unless you're willing to play nice and educate them.

  2. Vaccine 'clears HIV-like virus' in monkeys by Rebecca Morelle at the BBC (Keywords: science, experiments, HIV, vaccine)
Research published in the journal Nature has shown that vaccinated monkeys can clear Simian Immunodeficiency Virus (SIV) infection from their bodies.

It was effective in nine of the 16 monkeys that were inoculated.

The US scientists say they now want to use a similar approach to test a vaccine for HIV in humans.

  3. National Suicide Awareness Week by hlkolaya at Fierce, Freethinking Fatties (Keywords: suicide, self harm, bullying, weight stigma)
It’s National Suicide Awareness Week and that time of year when I talk about suicide and bullying and self-harm and, yes, weight stigma. Because weight stigma is the number one cause of bullying at school. And we know that kids who are fat, or even perceive themselves as fat, are more at risk for depression, self injury, suicide attempts, anxiety, eating disorders, and more. So talking about weight during National Suicide Awareness Week seems pretty important considering fat kids are more likely to be bullied and attempt suicide.

Thoughts on any of these stories? Also, what have you been reading (or writing!) this week?
