On & Off Partner causes birth control woes

So, I have been having sex with the same person for close to two years now. A few times, however, he's needed a "break" or just stopped engaging me. I normally finish the pill pack I am on, resign myself to it possibly being over and stop taking the pill for some period of time. I mean, I don't wanna pay for it if I'm not using it.

Normally this is short-lived. In fact, the twice that I have done this now, he has come back only a few days after I stop.

This time, here's what happened.

I took a whole pack except the last 2 pills (took 19 pills). The pills I skipped would have been taken Thursday & Friday (18th & 19th). So, on Monday (22nd), I got my period. On Friday (26th), he re-engaged and expressed interest again.

I started the first pill of a new pack on that day - Friday (26th), while still on the last waning bit of my period. He wanted to have sex Saturday, but I told him we needed to wait 7 days for the pills to be in effect again.

But then I was thinking about this:

"You may start the combination pill at any time. If you start within five days after the start of your period, you are protected against pregnancy right away." (pp.org)

Does this hold true in my case, or because I skipped the last 2 days of the previous pack, does that throw something out of wack?
