Links Round Up: Week Ending 24 November 2012

Welcome to our weekly links round-up. The LRU is a compilation of items from the past week that may be of interest to VPers and is intended to broaden the kinds of conversations we have here.

To submit articles for next week's round-up, e-mail frolicnaked@vaginapagina.com. If you have additional articles you'd like folks to know about this week, feel free to comment directly to this post.

As a reminder, in lieu of trigger warnings, I use keywords describing the themes of the piece. Please skim these before deciding to read the excerpt or click through for the full article. Outside sources are not safe spaces, and mainstream source's comments should almost always be avoided. The links I highlight don't necessarily reflect VP's views, or even my own, for that matter.

Also, for those new to VP's parts, a few of our resources: vp_bulletins for local announcements; contact_vp for questions and feedback on the way VP is run; the Vulvapedia for basic questions; and don't forget about our sibling community over on Dreamwidth!

This week's round-up includes: over-the-counter birth control pills, victim blaming, gendered violence, the joy of sex, Walmart protests, gender identity and discrimination-based killings, and transitioning.

  1. OB/GYN society says birth control pill should be sold over-the-counter by Ryan Jaslow at CBS News (Keywords: US, family planning, oral contraceptive pill, American Society of Obstetricians and Gynecologists)
The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) wrote in a new Committee Opinion that after reviewing evidence of risks and benefits, easier access to oral contraception may reduce unintended pregnancy rates, as well as the economic burden and health care costs pregnancies cause.

  2. No Excuses -- No Victim Blaming by Kath at Fat Heffalump (Keywords: Australia, White Ribbon Day, misogyny, violence, victim blaming, gender stereotypes)
Violence against women is not just physical or sexual. It is also mental, emotional, financial and institutional. Every act of dehumanising a woman is violence against women.

  3. Study: Sex outranks other joys of life by Michelle Castillo at CBS News (Keywords: New Zealand, sex, sexual pleasure, studies)
To find out what activities fulfilled people the best, researchers contacted a variety of subjects at random times three times a day over the week on their cell phones via text message.

  4. 1,000 Walmart protests across the US by Natasha Lennard at Salon (Keywords: US, Walmart, labor, capitalism, consumerism)
A Walmart press release this morning downplayed what commentators have called historic strike actions by Walmart workers this Black Friday across the United States.

  5. The UN Includes "Gender Identity" in Resolution Condemning Discrimination-Based Killings by Malaika at Autostraddle (Keywords: United Nations, gender identity, International Transgender Day of Remembrance, executions, violence)
This is the first time in history that gender identity has been included in the resolution. It's a big step for the United Nations, considering that only two years ago, the UN nearly dropped the category of sexual orientation from the list of condemned discrimination-based killings.

  6. The Beautiful Daughter: How My Korean Mother Gave Me the Courage to Transition by Andy Marra at Huffington Post (Keywords: US, Korea, adoption, trans*, transitioning)
Like me, more than 200,000 Korean babies and children have been sent overseas. But less than 3 percent of us are able to find our families. The odds were clearly not in my favor. But what if I did find my family after all these years? And how would they handle meeting a young woman instead of a baby boy who should have grown into manhood?

Thoughts on any of these stories? Also, what have you been reading (or writing!) this week?
