Infection or STI?

About a week and a half ago, I had unprotected sex with a guy. A few days after that, he tells me that he started having burning while peeing and this is when I started to notice symptoms also: slight burning while peeing (not a lot), very itchy down there, runny discharge that was either clear or kind of yellowish, and my labia seemed kind of swollen and inflammed-like. He was able to get to the doctor right away, and they diagnosed him with NGU, an STI that is an infection of the urethra.

I tried to make an appointment at my gyno for last week (I have not had a pap smear or pelvic exam in 4 years, although I just became sexually active this year) but they were without power the first 2 days of the week due to the storms, and then my gyno was on vacation the rest of the week due to the holiday.

So I had an appointment scheduled for today, however I woke up this morning having started my period. My period wasn't supposed to start until tomorrow, and I wasn't really worried about it starting early since lately it's always really, really light on the first day. But it's already quite heavy. I've called the gyno and they said I'll have to come back next week (my period usually lasts 5-6 days.)

So here are my questions: my symptoms aren't as bad anymore, but I still have some slight itching. I know through some intensive googling, that I could have anything from a vaginal infection like a yeast infection (which I've never had before) or chlamydia. I've already had to wait a week, do you think it's okay to wait another week before getting this diagnosed?

Also, do you think the infection or whatever is what caused my period to come a day early and to be heavier than normal?

Thank you in advance for your help.
