Links Round Up for Week Ending 7 July 2012

Welcome to our weekly links round-up. The LRU is a compilation of items from the past week that may be of interest to VPers and is intended to broaden the kinds of conversations we have here. To submit articles to the round-up, e-mail also_warriors@vaginapagina.com

As a reminder, in lieu of trigger warnings, I use keywords describing the themes of the piece. Please skim these before deciding to read the excerpt or click through for the full article. Outside sources are not safe spaces, and mainstream source's comments should almost always be avoided. The links I highlight don't necessarily reflect VP's views, or even my own, for that matter.

This week's round-up includes: panic over pretty, post-whiteness, an at-home HIV test, a 13 year old on slut shaming and rape culture, calling people "fat," and US weightlifter Sarah Robles.

  1. Panic over pretty at Spilt Milk (Keywords: beauty standards, body image, parenting, performing gender)
Lately I’ve noticed a lot of commentary promoting the idea that girls must strive for goals more worthy than prettiness; that instead of aiming for a celebrity look or a certain body weight, girls should be focusing on meaningful aims like career achievement and wholesome personality attributes. It’s well meaning and often exactly right.

But I fear there’s an underlying failure of understanding in some of this commentary.

  2. Post-Whiteness at The Huffington Post (Keywords: race, identity, institutional racism)
In other words, whiteness is methodically sustained through ideology and praxis. It is not easy to disappear and, I am pretty certain, that there are many White post-racialists who would rather not live in a post-white moment because the legal, economic, political, educational, religious, and cultural benefits assigned to their whiteness would be no more.

  3. Rapid H.I.V. Home Test Wins Federal Approval at The New York Times [may require subscription/login] (Keywords: HIV, home testing, doctors, FDA)
After decades of controversy, the Food and Drug Administration approved a new H.I.V. test on Tuesday that for the first time makes it possible for Americans to learn in the privacy of their homes whether they are infected.

  4. Slut Shaming and Why it's Wrong at YouTube [links to video] (Keywords: slut shaming, rape culture, sex)
So many teenage girls call each other sluts and they don't know about the meaning behind their words and I know it's just ignorance but it pisses me off, so here, have a video about why slut shaming is total bullshit.

  5. Internet Calls Fat Girl 'Fat' And Her Response Is... Perfect at Upworthy [links to video] (Keywords: body image, body policing, fat shaming, Internet trolls)
Now THIS is how you deal with Internet trolls.

Jump to :48 to find out her secret and to 2:36 to watch her totally own it.

  6. Internet shows love for Sarah Robles, American's strongest woman at Fit and Feminist (Keywords: Olympics, sports, class, body image, beauty standards)
Robles is a 23-year-old Californian who can lift the equivalent of an adult male lion over her head. She’s the highest ranked weightlifter in the United States. She represents the United States’ best chance to medal in women’s weightlifting.... Robles is also struggling to get by, subsisting on $400 a month from USA Weightlifting, discounted groceries from food [banks] and donations.
