Why is sex still painful?

I'm 31, and lost my virginity this past new year's eve. This was after we had been trying for weeks and it was still quite painful. Each time we did it after that (which wasn't very often), it was always painful when he was trying to put it in, but would get a little more comfortable once he was finally all the way in (which took forever.)

That guy and I broke up in February and I haven't had sex since then. I've recently begun seeing another guy and last night we attempted to have sex, which was a disaster. It was just as painful as when I was still a virgin and I couldn't even get him in all the way. After awhile, I just told him to stop and we gave up because it hurt that bad.

I don't understand at all. I thought that after I finally lost my virginity it wouldn't be as painful anymore. I was well-lubricated and although I was a little nervous, I was relaxed enough. Is it always going to be painful like this? I do have a gyno appointment scheduled for next week to rule out any infections, although I'm pretty sure I don't have anything. I've always been afraid about putting things in my vagina (tampons, fingers) but I figured it had gone away once I lost my virginity.

I would really like to be able to enjoy sex. Thanks in advance for any help you can give.
