Did y'all see this entry on Jezebel about the cost of owning a vagina?
I really wanted to like this article. I did. But then I read it, and I really didn't like it! The list just seems totally randomly constructed to me. And as a dirty hippie, I really couldn't relate. But I was curious about what others think.
Here are some of the things that seemed strange to me:
1) Birth control - $129.99/mo without insurance. I haven't bought HBC in a long time, and I've been very very lucky to always either have insurance or be subsidized. But that still seems awfully high. Surely you can get say, a generic, for much cheaper? (I know that some people are limited in what they can use, and end up paying more.)
2) Vagisil - uh...is that really something that most vag owners are buying on the regular? If so, color me unaware.
3) Tampons/maxi pads - bwahahaha! So glad to be part of the cup cult. I've saved hundreds of dollars. Yay! When I do buy the occasional box, I am shocked at how expensive they are. Yeesh. Same goes for YI remedies. Boric acid all the way...cheap and effective!
4) Pube removal - I am always surprised when I read that most youngish women remove their pubes. Trimming is much cheaper, yo. I also think that if they are going to include this, they should include other optional grooming stuff that most women do. I guess they didn't because other grooming stuff is not vag related, but if they are going to assume that having a vag = being a woman, why not include the whole package?
All in all, I am very happy that I am a hairy, home-remedy IUD ladycup user. Evidently it's saving me tons of money! And time! And bullshit!
What do you think folks? How much does it cost you to "own" your vagina?
EDIT: OMG how I wish that there would be a societal understanding that the cost of having PIV sex with someone with a vagina is half the HBC, half the condoms, and a big ol' dose of "Ze can do what ze wants with hir pubes."
