Links Round Up: Double Bonus Edition

Welcome to our new weekly links round-up. This is a compilation of items -- usually from the past week, this time from the past 2 weeks -- that may be of interest to VPers.

As a reminder, in lieu of trigger warnings, I use keywords describing the themes of the piece. Please skim these before deciding to read the excerpt or click through for the full article. Some posts may be political in nature. Outside sources are not safe spaces, and mainstream source's comments should almost always be avoided. The links I highlight don't necessarily reflect VP's views, or even my own, for that matter.

This week's round-up includes: thoughts on Cynthia Nixon, queerness, and "born this way;" breast cancer's impact on women of color; sexual assaults in the BDSM/kink community; housing discrimination and LGBT folks; and squirting.

  1. Genetic or Not, Gay Won’t Go Away at New York Times (Keywords: queerness, genetics, culture, homophobia, heterosexism)
Born this way. That has long been one of the rallying cries of a movement, and sometimes the gist of its argument. Across decades of widespread ostracism, followed by years of patchwork acceptance and, most recently, moments of heady triumph, gay people invoked that phrase to explain why homophobia was unwarranted and discrimination senseless.
Lady Gaga even spun an anthem from it.
But is it the right mantra to cling to? The best tack to take?

  2. Here’s How Deadly Breast Cancer is For Women of Color in the U.S. at Colorlines (Keywords: US, race, cis-centric language)
While breast cancer is widely known as a particularly heartbreaking disease, reports have shown that the impacts on women of color, particularly African American women, are especially devastating. Black women are more likely to die from breast cancer than any other group of women. To address this concern, the National Cancer Institute (NCI) released three videos targeting black women as part of its outreach to women of color for National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

  3. When safe words are ignored at Salon (Keywords: rape, sexual assault, BSDM, kink)
Women in the bondage and kink scene are speaking out about sexual assaults in the community, and calling for change

  4. New Federal Rule Makes LGBT Housing Discrimination Illegal at ColorLines (Keywords: US, queer, housing, laws )
On Saturday the Obama Administration announced historic new federal rules that will strengthen housing discrimination protections for transgender and other LGBT people.

  5. Squirting tips at Quizzical Pussy (Keywords: NSFW, ejaculation, sex, masturbation, less gendered!)
Experiment. A lot. Alone, with a partner, with several different partners. If it doesn’t happen right away try doing kegels regularly for a month and then trying again. Try a new toy. If it’s important to you, keep at it. Keep calm and carry on.

What have you been reading (or writing!) this week?

If you'd like to see an article included in next week's round-up, send an e-mail to also_warriors@vaginapagina.com . Non-US and positive links are especially appreciated. (We can't fit all the awesome links people send, but we'll try to post any that we don't include to Facebook, Tumblr, or Twitter.) You can also just take matters into your own hands and post in the comments!
