Since I started getting my period around age 13, my periods have been really regular. 28 day cycle, with minimal symptoms (cramping, etc) But in the last year or so, I've noticed that my menstrual cycles have gotten worse and worse. My scenario usually goes like this. Day one is a light flow but I'm in excruciating pain. I have cramps that have me doubled over, my bones ache and the pain radiates through to my back. Usually I can sort of deal with this, but this month has been particularly horrific. I woke up with my period on Tuesday, and my pain started out at it's usual level. Around a 5, I'd say, until after my first class ended at noon. By the time I got back to my dorm I was almost crying. I didn't go to my second class because I was in so much pain.
Then last night at work (day 2, usually a regular/semi-heavy flow) I noticed that my flow had gotten really light, almost as if it was ending. It was that way until I went to sleep. I woke up around four this morning with the most god awful cramps and was back to a super heavy flow.
And now during the day, my flow's gone back to light and my cramps have come back.
I was describing this to a friend and she said it sounded like a might have a cyst. She suggested I see a gyno, which I'm rather nervous about because I've never been to one (I haven't had sex yet so I didn't see the point)
EDIT: I forgot to mention that my cycle length has been off the last four months or so as well. I usually go a full 28 days, but the last few months it's only been around 20.
