One-time severe menstrual cramps

About a week and a half ago, I started my period in the morning and as usual, I had cramps. I usually have mild cramps that require painkillers for the first 24 hours or so of my period. I took a Tramacet pill in the morning, but after an hour the pain only got worse. I took more pills a couple of hours later but was still in extreme pain. It was the worst my cramps have ever been--I was literally writhing on the floor screaming. I was home alone with a friend. We ended up calling the local nurse hotline because I didn't know what I could do. She asked me some questions about the pain, got me to take deep breaths and calm down. She suggested a heated pad and a hot bath, and recommended I see my doctor. The hot bath really helped, and for the rest of the day the cramps died down to mild-to-light cramps.

I haven't had the chance to see my doctor yet, and in the meantime I thought I'd ask the comm for their opinions and advice. The nurse had asked me if I was pregnant, and I'm fairly certain no. I always use condoms, and none of them have ever broken, and I was bleeding that day. Since then I've been sort of paranoid that this will happen again/something's wrong rather than it just being a one-time particularly bad case of cramps. Paranoia is making me wonder if my recent tummy ache and gas is related or not. Is it likely this happened because of some underlying reason? Or was it just a really bad case of cramps?
