So I had some bloodwork and a urine sample done yesterday to appease my grandmother, and when the doctor gave me my results she mentioned that she had written me a prescription for antibiotics because they found blood in my urine, so I COULD have a UTI. I was completely surprised, because I've had no symptoms whatsoever (but I guess it could be an asymptomatic infection).
She told me that because the visit was entirely self-pay (I have no insurance) a culture would've been very expensive so they were just going to assume it was a UTI and treat it accordingly. Is this standard practice in such situations? Could taking these antibiotics if it's NOT a UTI be problematic in any way?
