Pain in urethra- not a UTI

So I've been having some UTI-like symptoms for the past couple weeks, but I am 100% sure it's not a UTI.  On Aug 3rd I started getting the urgency to urinate frequently as well as some burning, so I went to the doctor right away but the test came back negative.  The symptoms still persisted so I went to the doctor again yesterday and the test came up negative AGAIN.

However there's a difference in how this condition feels than the UTIs I've had in the past.  I keep getting these intense, localized twinges of pain right in my urethra for about a second, it'll go away, and then about five seconds later it'll come back.  The twinges aren't constant... it seems like they are more frequent/intense in the morning and in the evening, but during the day yesterday they weren't quite as noticeable.

I'm completely at a loss for what this might be, and I'm experiencing a whole lot of pain, annoyance, and frustration.  In addition to that, my classes start on the 30th and I will be miserable if I have to deal with this crap during classes.  If anyone has any advice for me as to what this might be, I'd appreciate it!

I agree -- get a culture done, and if they say, "No, still nothing," I'd turn that back on the doctor real fast and say, "Okay, then what's likely to be causing the symptoms? Please don't make me go to Dr. Google. Dr. Google says everyone's pregnant and has cancer."

Another thing to consider culturing might be... a urethral yeast infection, mebbe?

Good luck!

I recently passed a kidney stone and it felt similar to your description. Initially the symptoms were blood in my urine and flank pain, urine culture was clear (minus the blood of course). Lasted a few days and went away, figured I'd passed it without realizing it. Then I had about a week period where I'd have the similar symptoms to yours - some burning on urination (nothing major) along with urethra pain - would come and go. Figured I had developed an UTI but nope. The few hours before I actually did pass the stone (as in I felt it pass and saw the sucker in the toilet) I was having intense pain that can best be described as a vaginal charlie horse. Even that wasn't constant though - it would come and go, depend on the way I sat, stood, etc.

So I dunno, just a possibility, throwing it out there. OTC UTI "pain pills" from AZO did wonders for me when I was having the more intense urethra pain.

Hey everybody, thanks for all your advice. I actually ended up going into the ER today due to severe abdominal pain and discovered I have a 3cm cyst on my right ovary, which may or may not be contributing to the urethral pain as well. Either way, the doctor decided to go ahead and give me some antibiotics because he seemed fairly convinced that I probably had a UTI in addition to the cyst and it just wasn't showing up for whatever reason. So, hopefully the antibiotics work... and hopefully the cyst doesn't grow anymore!
