Phantom period?

Is it possible for a woman to be on her period but not see it?  Here's the thing: for most of my menstruating life I've been pretty irregular, but for the past year, I've actually been regular and that's been nice (always good to be prepared, right?).  According to my calendar, I should've started my period on August 4th, but it's still not here and I don't feel it coming any time soon.  Normally, I'll know for sure the day before it wakes me up in the middle of the night with painful cramping.  I'm not pregnant (checked twice).

I can deal with my period being late (it's annoying, but I should be used to it), but the reason I've asked if there's such a thing as "phantom periods" is because when I go to the bathroom to pee, I do smell that slightly metallic odor I associate with being on my period (I'm assuming I'm not the only one).  Does this make sense?  Could I actually be on my period without any visual evidence (there's not even a HINT of color when I wipe)?

Thanks in advance for any insight.
