Abnormal Pap Smear

I just received a pap smear a few weeks ago, and just received an abnormal result in the mail. This is my first pap smear since 2005-6, which was then totally normal. I've been with my boyfriend for a year and a half, and would be the only person that I have had unprotected sex with since that time. However I do know that HPV can be transmitted even when using condoms, so this adds an element that could go back even farther than that.

In the letter, it recommends coming in for a colposcopy, but does not indicate what the actual result of the test is other than abnormal. I'm not sure what this means, other than I probably have had the infection for a considerable amount of time.

Does anyone have any idea what this might indicate? I'm driving myself crazy over it. I feel all sorts of emotions about the situation...feeling angry that in all of this time I never went for an exam, feeling angry that it is happening in general.

Does anyone have experience the could offer about this? I did some reading, and it seems that it must have indicated something because they directly asked me to come in for a colposcopy right away, rather than just asking me to retest. I wonder about the length of time this has been going on for, also.
