My strange periods (and lack thereof)

Hello. It's my first post here and it's going to be a long one.

I have had period issues for a couple of years and it's pissing me off.

I started my periods about 6 years ago and from the onset they have been totally agonising. I remember going to the doctors two weeks before my first one because I'd been in total pain for weeks and she said I was going to start my period. Urgh.

I get pain that's so bad that I can't walk/move and the bottom of my stomach (where the cramps hurt) tends to feel hard/swollen. I also tend to get diarrhoea around the time of my period and I have an extremely heavy flow and pass lots of clots (if that's relevant). My pain starts around 5 days before my period and finishes about 3 days after.

In November(ish) 2008 my periods stopped. They didn't come back for about 7 months.. but I still got pain around every 30 days, just no bleeding or anything like that. I hadn't put on a noticeable amount of weight, wasn't unusually stressed, no new medication etc. I went to the GP and he did lots of blood tests which all came back clear and he basically just shrugged it off.

I recently went back to him and he gave me some 30 day charts to fill out with ticks for bleeding and numbers for pain and Ponstan (mefanamic acid) for the primary spasmodic dysmenorrhoea he diagnosed me with. He told me to go back in six weeks with the chart and stuff. That month I bled for one day, had pain for 10 and my cycle was only 23 days. Last month I bled for 8 days and had pain for 14. I went back like he told me to and he prescribed me the pill (Yasmin) and told me to start taking it the first day of my next cycle. It's been 45 days since my last bleed and I have been getting cramps for a fortnight at least. I've been expecting it to come every day and it hasn't. I am currently not having sex - and I am a lesbian anyway so there is zero chance of pregnancy.

I'm scared of starting the pill when my periods are so messed up because I don't want to just cover it up if I have some serious underlying condition. I am getting increasingly worried with the combination of irregularity and pain etc that I am having. I have no idea what it could be, either. I'm just looking for general advice/reassurance I think. Has anybody been in a similar situation? Did you ever find out why? What should I do? Any general Yasmin/Ponstan experiences?

Thanks in advance for the help. :)
