UTIs: what is "mild"?

I've read up on UTIs and know that mild ones can be treated by drinking lots of water and cranberry juice. But what constitutes a mild UTI? I'd rather not go to the doc unless I have to do so.

My symptoms include having to pee maybe every hour (but I'm making a concerted effort to drink water, so this seems normal), and almost pulsing pain in my urethra after I'm done peeing. This cropped up on Friday, after I had protected PIV sex, and no, I didn't urinate until hours afterwards. My pee is slightly tinted due to the beets I had yesterday and the B vitamins I'm taking.
