His friend told him they ask the questions about having sex with men because they don't allow gay men to donate blood, ever. His reasoning for this is that they are far more likely to engage in risky behaviour, and that it's much easier to catch an STD/STI for men having anal sex.
This of course ignores the fact that many straight couples engage in anal sex, and that not all gay men do. And as far as I know, it's young women who are catching more STIs these days.
What really bothers me is that, although his friend is not homophobic, his information certainly is. He also used incidences of people using donating blood as a test for HIV, and another man who knowingly donated while he had syphilis. I think this has more to do with these people being assholes, actually, and little to do with their sexual prefferences. As a woman who's donated blood, I know they ask me the exact same questions as they asked my husband, as well. And it's not as if straight people never contract HIV/AIDS. I mean, we test the blood for a reason, right?
So can someone please tell me, does Canada allow gay men to donate blood, and if not, wtf?
