The Great Lube Post

Hi there, vulva-lovin' superstars!

We've been getting a lot of questions about lube lately. A couple of people suggested that we do One Big Lube Post, and we (the VP team) thought that was a great idea. So here it is!

Please post comments about lube: lube reviews, your favorite and least favorite lubes, etc., right here to this post. We'd like to archive and tag this post, and then people wanting to know what lube to buy can just check here - so we need lots of contributions. Let's talk lube!

Thanks everyone!

I'm a fan of Eros. It's very light and silky. Not really greasy or anything. Not sticky either, which is a huge plus. Doesn't have a smell or tates. It makes a pretty nice massage oil/lube/product as well. Come to think of it... I don't think there's much negative for me to say about it. I give it a 9.5.

KY Ultra gel is pretty good too. It's my old faithful (in that my vag seems to never have any irritation problems with it). It's much different than the regular KY's in that, I feel, this one lasts longer and doesn't get as sticky. Downside is that I find myself needing to reapply it fairly often because although it beats the other waster-based KY's, it's not as good as a silicone lube. That pretty much translates to using a fair amount of the stuff per activity. Oh and it tastes gross. I give it a 7. Not so much for feeling, but rather for reliability.

I've also had pretty good experiences with Wet original. I would probably use this stuff more often if not for the fact that frequent use of it seems to encourage yeast infections [for me]. The smell is not too bad and it doesn't need to be reapplied as often as the KY Ultra gel. I'll sometimes "treat" myself to using Wet right before my period (when I know I'm not likely to get a YI) because I like it so much. I give it an 8.

What do I NOT recommend trying? Ky Warming lube. It's awful. It burns me. It gets like a -10 million.

You, too with the warming! I just posted that below you.
moochar 16th-Nov-2005 04:15 pm (UTC)
And I will also agree with the comments about the warming lube. That's a night I'll never forget, no matter how hard I try.
electronicolors 16th-Nov-2005 04:27 pm (UTC)
am I the only one who had a good experience with it?

o_o?
hikerpoet 16th-Nov-2005 07:08 pm (UTC)
I've tried the warming stuff...it was literally the only thing left on the shelf in an emergency, lol. I don't know if it is my favorite thing ever...okay all around one, but certainly no traumatizing experiences.

I did end up with a store brand once too...similar situation. I guess i need to do more lube-buying planning and not get stuck last minute! It is really thick and awful for vaginal and most things, but it actually works very well for anal...guess the thicker is more of a protectant in that case or something?
chippyjem 16th-Nov-2005 07:18 pm (UTC)
i LOVE the warming lube!
frolicnaked 17th-Nov-2005 02:57 am (UTC)
I like the warming stuff better than the regular. Even though virtually any kind of soap, cleanser, or spermicide makes my vag wig out like there's no tomorrow, the warming lube didn't bother her at all. Though I could see, theoretically, how one might not like it.
milyssabeth oh my!28th-Jul-2008 12:28 am (UTC)
i can't believe people don't like KY warming! i love that stuff! :)
has anyone here tried doc johnsons tingle gel? i'm looking to find out if it's edible and if it's good.. i had some stuff called rocket balm for manual stimulation that was AMAZING (but i'd avoid it for you sensitive skin folks) and i need a replacement!
she_obliterated 16th-Nov-2005 06:19 pm (UTC)
Yeah, mine was hideous. So much for sex, instead I ran screaming into an ice shower.
kaonamai 16th-Nov-2005 06:14 pm (UTC)
i agree about the warming lube. AWFUL.
she_obliterated 16th-Nov-2005 03:45 pm (UTC)
Here's a lube warning.

I know a lot of people who like it, but the KY Warming liquid gave me a terrible allergic reaction. It went from pleasantly warming to burning and itching in under 5 minutes. It was on my partner's hands and anywhere he touched me turned red and started to burn.

Test things on the inside of your elbow first! I didn't and I paid for it.
electronicolors 16th-Nov-2005 04:26 pm (UTC)
As a general disclaimer, my boyfriend and I do not use condoms, so I have no idea how these lubes perform with them.

Lubes I've used:

Astroglide -- my boyfriend's staple when we started dating, he used it for masturbation. I found it way too sticky, and during sex it tended to "clump" up inside me. Later, when I'd wash off, I'd find balls of dried lube.. ew! It was good for giving him hand jobs, but during sex it really cut down on sensation for me. We agreed to switch to something else...

KY Warming Liquid -- I was curious, and convinced my boyfriend we should pick up a little bottle. Unlike others, it didn't burn me at all. I found it silky smooth and the warming felt great, but it wasn't knock your socks off fantastic. I did like the liquid feel for when my boyfriend fingered me... and then during sex I didn't have the same loss of sensation as with the astroglide. It also didn't get everywhere... No where near as sticky! But its expensive, and the same irritation problems persisted.

Cheap-o walmart brand -- bought on a whim, because it was 2 dollars and we thought it would be a good alternative for times when we didn't mind getting the bed and ourselves sticky. I HATED it. It got all over my hands in thick, clumpy blobs. Difficult to give a hand job, impossible for sex. Hated hated hated it. Refused to come off my hand, even with towels standing by for such a reason.

What I currently use:

Slippery Stuff
LOVE IT. Both versions! Glycerin free, which means no irritation for me afterwards. Clean up is a breeze with both gel and liquid. Reasonably priced, too. Cheaper than Astroglide or KY. (Liquid is 7 dollars for 4oz, Gel is 8 dollars for 4oz)

Slippery Stuff Liquid -- my favorite. Ultra smooth and silky, only takes a few drops to lube me up for penetration. Not very practical for hand jobs, since its such a thin liquid, but great for sex. We put a little on the vulva just before sex and he just slides right in. We both love that there's tons of sensation, no lube in the way to prevent feeling. It doesn't get everywhere, cleans up super easy. We can use this late at night or at times when we don't have a lot of time for clean up afterwards.

Slippery Stuff Gel -- His favorite. I like it, too, but not for sex. What this is perfect for is me giving him a hand job (which he loves) It works fine for sex, there's just not as much sensation, but everything still feels nice. It's SUPER thick at first. We had trouble getting it out of the bottle in the beginning! But once you start to play with it, the gel turns ultra smooth and silky. I do like that, because it means lube doesn't drip all over my belly or his. Like with the liquid, clean up is really easy. I can just brush my hands into a towel or, in a pinch, the bed sheets and be good to grab his back without getting lube everywhere. It does have a tendancy to dry out if you stop playing with it, which means my hands dry off fast, but means reapplying the lube is necessary sometimes. Overall, a very good lube.
athena_altera 17th-Nov-2005 05:05 am (UTC)
I also highly recommend Slippery Stuff!
ten_of_swords 16th-Nov-2005 05:18 pm (UTC)
Wet Light is my personal favorite. It's good if you have sensitive skin, and a little bottle lasts for quite a while.
misslynn 16th-Nov-2005 05:21 pm (UTC)
i have used astroglide and slippery stuff. the astroglide worked well but has glycerin, which may or may not trigger/exacerbate yeast infections. the slippery stuff works very well, and I highly recommend it for anal, but it leaves a slightly funny smell, so I don't recommend it if there's going to be oral involved.
misslynn 16th-Nov-2005 05:22 pm (UTC)
addendum. i forgot a few things. we used the slippery stuff gel.

also, i've tried the ky warming ultra gel. no glycerin. provided a mild tingling/warming at first but didn't do much after a minute or so. no ill effects, though.
mammothali a slew of lubes from a girl very sensitive to YIs16th-Nov-2005 05:27 pm (UTC)
KY original - gel - glycerin water-based:
This is great for anal, but I can't use it for vaginal sex because it gives me YIs. 'Nuff said.

KY with spermicide - gel - glycerin water-based:
A waste of money because the first time I used it, I wound up in the tub screaming in pain. Be careful with anything spermicidal!

KY Ultra Gel - not really a gel - water-based:
This is more liquidy than the name says. Otherwise, a very good product. Doesn't give me YIs and isn't that drying, though it still needs to be reapplied every so often. Sort of thin, but it's good for PIV.

KY SilkE - liquid - water-based:
It never says it's supposed to be used for sex but I've used it, with no problems. For a long time I used this and I don't think I got YIs. It dries a little more quickly and every so often would be irritating if I had cuts on my vulva. Definitely recommend for non-sex, though.

Wet Platinum - liquid - silicone-based:
My favorite!!!! Never dries, of course, and never gives an infection. I can't use it with my silicone toys, however, so I've been on a search for non-glycerin lubes. Read about my sampling below.

Sampled - note, at some point during sampling, I did get a combo YI/BV, but I have no idea what caused it! I should have spread out my samples more...
Slippery Stuff - gel or liquid - water-based:
I am definitely thinking of buying one of these. Probably the original (not the gel) and use it with my toys. It feels JUST like my natural lubricant.

Good vibes - gel or liquid - water based:
These seemed the same as slippery stuff. I think they stole the recipe. I couldn't see the difference. If they're cheaper, I might buy the good vibes lube.

Maximus - thick gel - water based:
Wow. Very thick. Everyone raves about this one for a reason. I might buy this for anal, though I don't necessarily *need* 2 new lubes!
kaonamai 16th-Nov-2005 06:16 pm (UTC)
What's everyone's feeling on Astrogilde? Does it cause YIs? I just bought some and now i'm scared to use it!
snowwhiteapples 16th-Nov-2005 08:43 pm (UTC)
I quite like Astroglide, it's never given me a YI but I'm not very prone to get them.
strange_donovan 16th-Nov-2005 06:48 pm (UTC)
the warming kind is awful. it is like a hot stick of fire over and over
avianity 16th-Nov-2005 07:23 pm (UTC)
KY original--ick. It didn't actually give me a YI, but it made me itch like mad the entire next day.

Probe (the "classic" kind)--I had a sample packet of this but, once I opened it, I decided not to use it. The consistency really turned me off; it felt so similar to raw egg whites that it was just creepy (for me).

Liquid Silk--the first glycerin-free lube I tried and still my favorite. It feels very silky and natural; I use it when I'm manually pleasuring myself, or whenever I experience unusual dryness (which, given that I take Zoloft, is more often than I'd like). Everything I've read about it online says that it has a bitter taste, but I've never noticed one.

Maximus--my *other* favorite lube, and the one I use with my toys. I like the thickness of it; it stays put and doesn't make a mess. The only negative I can think of is that it gets sort of "jammy" and uncomfortable once the fun's over.
cathubodva 16th-Nov-2005 07:37 pm (UTC)
I like Wet Platinum. It's not sticky, and it's really silky. I've got really sensitive skin, and we've never had a problem with it.

I don't have a lot of experience with lubes, though - this was the first one we picked out, and we stuck with it.
lecabinet 16th-Nov-2005 07:51 pm (UTC)
I've always used KY original and I like it alot. I always make sure I get the one with the pop off top that flips, some places have slightly older stock with a screw cap... precious moments wasted!

My boyfriend bought Vielle silicon based stuff, which felt like... I was oiling a bicycle. I was disappointed because I'd heard it was more of a natural feel, but maybe I'm too used to KY.

Also, I can't orgasm if KY is used on my clitoris, it's too thick.
sheisaeval 16th-Nov-2005 08:03 pm (UTC)
I love Eros, Liquid Silk, and Frixion. Probe is good but its very stringy. And No9 is good too.

I hate succlent flavored lubes - taste nasty - and most watery lubes like astroglide.
witch_kat 16th-Nov-2005 08:31 pm (UTC)
we swear by the "o my" kind, its a natural lube, and the flavours actually taste pretty good! I've seen it at Shoppers in Ontario, and at good for her.
kissthedarkness 16th-Nov-2005 09:05 pm (UTC)
Favorite lube = Wet Light. It's not sticky, it's silky, doesn't really smell bad, and it's supposed to not be as likely to cause yeast infections.

Least favorite = any kind of KY. The jelly kind burns (I've had other people tell me it did too) and it's kind of chunky, and just overall it doesn't feel very good.
ratchow 16th-Nov-2005 09:23 pm (UTC)
LIQUID SILK. I got mine from amazon.com, and it came in a pump dispenser like hand soap. It's awesome because there is no fiddling with caps in the heat of the moment! And it's glycerin free, and it doesn't smell weird.
skewedsolipsism Lube16th-Nov-2005 10:02 pm (UTC)
My doctor just recommended Almond Oil as a natural lube (if you're going to have sex without protection). If you are using a condom, you can't use almond oil (and she suggested astroglide as being the least irritating to the vagina).
athena_altera Re: Lube17th-Nov-2005 05:06 am (UTC)
Almond oil is delicious! I use it for massages.
_jejune 17th-Nov-2005 01:15 am (UTC)
Another vote for Liquid Silk. One of the things that I really have not liked with other lubricants was that they all feel sticky/tacky after sex. Liquid Silk feels more lotion-y afterward. It's very smooth and just the right consistency: a little thin, but not so thin that it spills out of your hand during application.

Also, the bottle is just clear with the white lube inside, so it could be passed off as lotion or something if you accidentally leave it out.

It doesn't taste all that great, but no unflavored lube really does.

My least favorite lube is Wet. The convenience of it being sold in every drugstore ever isn't good enough to make up for how sticky and disgusting-smelling it was. I've heard good things about Wet Platinum though, which is their silicone lube.
pixie_nz 17th-Nov-2005 02:55 am (UTC)
I recommend the Wet Platinum without hesitation.
mangofandango 17th-Nov-2005 03:44 am (UTC)
I should throw my lube opinions into the ring, right? :)

We used to use KY because it was cheap...but I also got alot of yeast infections and didn't feel adequately lubricated no matter how much we used, because it got so sticky and gross.

Then I tried Eros silicone lube, and seriously, my feelings on lube changed forever. It's great stuff - light and slippery, never dries out, and you only need a little bit. Plus, it lasts pretty much indefinitely (in terms of spoilage, I mean), so you know you're going to get your money's worth if you like it.

I can't use Eros with silicone toys, however, and my favorite vibe is a silicone dolphin by Fun Factory. :) Plus, sometimes I just like a little variation. Which leads me to my choice of water-based lube: Sensua Organics. They're fabulous! I've actually been using it more than the Eros lately, and I really like Eros. Sensua Organics lubes are light, non-sticky, and glycerin-free. They also contain a little bit of grapefruit seed extract, which is supposed to help keep away infection. They have unscented, and then they have raspberry and peach, I believe. I have a strawberry one, because it was given to me, but I think it may have been discontinued? It's really nice, though.
thevargasgirl 17th-Nov-2005 04:05 am (UTC)
Another HUGE vote for Eros. It makes me happy.
xcouriersx 20th-Nov-2005 01:06 am (UTC)
JO It's glycerin, oil, & silicone free! Great for women who get infected/irritated easily.. I used to get a yeast infection at least once a once (and it would clean up.. and then sex with astroglide/ky/whatever else we were using)..

It's way $$$ ($14.50 for a small bottle) but now I never have to pay for medications & doctor trips! Safe for toys as well..
zellie_bean 27th-Dec-2005 01:53 am (UTC)
Adding my two cents...

after an exhaustive search for lube, I ended up trying to choose between Liquid Silk and WET Platinum. I went with WET P. because it was tasteless (can switch to oral, yay!) and because it was conveniently available at spensers.

Astroglide was sticky and dried up fast. I still used a handful of WET P. but at least that's only once or twice during sex, not CONSTANTLY.
vermillionlove 5th-Jul-2013 04:44 am (UTC)
I had a weird reaction with astroglide. I rubbed it onto my SO's penis, and it turned from clear and slippery to white and sticky. I believe the cause was a male yeast infection. before that, I had been having yeast infection symptoms that went away, so we tried having sex, and it hurt, so I figured it was still a problem-- AND I passed it to the SO. I searched all over the internet for an explanation, but that seemed to make the most sense. we looked at the ingredients and saw glycerine, and we assumed that the glycerine must have reacted to the overgrowth of yeast. It was a big mess. we promptly washed it completely off of ourselves. I am going to be throwing away the astroglide and getting something water based!
