How old are you?
When your younger or just in the beginnings of getting your period it is common for it to be irregular.

Well just as a point of reference, I got my period when I was 11 and didn't become regurlar until i went on the pill about a year ago ( I was 17 at the time.) So I guess, some people develop regularity and other's dont. Are you an athlete? because that could be a factor.

Ahh. No wonder my friend never got hers. She is almost 16 and never started her period. But she is insanely athletic. Lucky her. I've had mine since I was 12.

actually it could be causing her to lose bone density if it continues.

Don't worry, I have the same problem. I don't know if mine will take time to regulate, but I want to rule out any problems.

Let me ask you:
1) Are you overweight?
2) Are you stressed?
3) Do you have unusual eating habits?

Maybe it'll take time for your period to get on track. I'm 18 and have had my period since I was roughly 13 and it's not regular. I would check with your doc just in case. Take care and let me know how it goes.

1) I believe if your BMI is not considered really overweight or "obese", your weight shouldn't be that big an issue. Though keeping yourself in shape does the body good.

2) Stress can be the cause of your missed periods.

3) Everyone has a chocolate cake or slips in some sweets here or there. My friend told me that relying on some sort diet can affect how your period goes. I think as long as you maintain your weight and eat healthy foods you're okay.

Anyway, I would check with a doctor just to be sure. Take care.

I'm 28, and I've had my period since I was 12...and if I wasn't on my current pill (Levora), I wouldn't be regular at all. I've been on about 10 types of pills to find one that would make me regular, and for the most part, I finally am...and without too bad of any of the wonky side effects. However, about 2 years ago, I was off the pill -- and I was *still* wildly irregular...it's just a fact of life for me, I guess.

Is there any reason your period is irregular or is it just something that happened?
buppyspek 21st-Jan-2005 03:42 am (UTC)
Yep, it's normal. For me, it was normal for me to only get my period 4 times a year, which I thought was great... until I started having sex. Then the fact that my cycle wasn't regular was a cause of a lot of stress. Now that I'm on the pill, I get my period every month. Not a big fan of that, but at least I know what's going on with my body now!

If you've never been regular, you should go to a doctor and get it checked out. The primary reason for this is polycystic overy syndrom, which is much less scary than it sounds. Something like 10% of women, including myself have it, and it really means nothing as far as day to day life is concerned. It does put you at higher risk for diabetes, heart disease, endometiral cancer and a few other nasties down the road, so it's good to know how to lower your risks now if you do have it. It also messes with fertility.
Most people don't have all symptoms, but they can include obesity, gaining weight in a male pattern (meaning on your abdomen before hips or breasts), having darker or coarser body hair, tendency towards acne, insulin resistence, infreq2uent or absent periods and ovulation, elevated testosterone, and depression.
There are a few much scarier but thankfully also much rarer reasons for screwy hormones causing very irregular periods, such as adrenal or pituitary tumors. These are NOT likely, but can be ruled out with a simple bloodtest, so I highly recommend seeing your doctor.
