Finding the Right Sex Toy

Hi vagina_pagina! Long time no see.

I'm a cis-female 6 months out of a long-term relationship, and haven't been having a lot of sex since then. I'm finding myself bored of the same old masturbation routine. I miss penetration (both vaginally and anally), and want to be able to feel that sensation again on my own. In addition, I've made a friend over the internet who I've been videochatting with and other things, and I think it would be fun to mix up our "conversations" a bit.

When I start to look at sex toys online, I'm really overwhelmed, and I think I'm a bit too shy to walk into a sex shop on my own. I bought a vibrator a couple of years ago (http://www.libida.com/papillion-massager.html) when I was pre-orgasmic. I think I used it about twice before I threw it in a drawer and never touched it again. Now that I am orgasmic, maybe I would enjoy the vibrations?

Basically, I'm looking for either:
a) specific recommendations for toys
or
b) recommendations for guides to help me find what I want. I've tried to Google some things, but I'm still overwhelmed and confused.

I know this is pretty vague, but I appreciate any help you can give!

I would recommend checking out Babeland - great, sex positive site that has a ton of info, recommendations, how tos, and all sorts of great stuff that might help you get started on finding what you would like:
http://www.babeland.com/

And they're really cool people, so if you did need to ask a question, and contacted them, they would be very helpful and supportive :)

They've also got a list of "staff picks" that might be a good place to start:

This was on the first link that you sent. Do you (or does anybody) have any experience with it? It seems like it'd fit the way I masturbate and maybe make it more exciting (but doesn't solve the penetration part).

if you were wanting something with penetration as well a rabbit would work and these days there are SO many different variations so you might be able to find one that is the right shape/size/etc it's actually impressive how vast the range or rabbit type toys are now
ghostyacct 30th-Jan-2013 04:55 pm (UTC)
But how do you find the right shape/size without spending money on rejects? Haha.

Agred on the rabbit and here's a guide on how to pick yours : http://www.annsummers.com/page/RampantRabbitsGuide

I'm barely starting in the toy world, but I really like my little dolly dolphin by fun factory. It's absolutely cute, fairly silent, waterproof and high quality silicone and the nose especially fits well over the area for external stimulation. Anything that's curvy rather than straight towards the end of the shaft gets my vote. However, I've found it doesn't do much as an internal toy alone. Another highly praised toy for external vibe are magic wands, hitachi makes the most praised, likely most expensive one, but several stores carry their own brand. For a less intimidating approach, websites often recommend vibrating bullets as the perfect beginner's sex toy, such as these : http://www.lovehoney.co.uk/sex-toys/vibrators/bullet-vibrators/ although most are usually straight, and a size that fits in your hand.

For inner stimulation however, I'm starting to think I might like a bendy rabbit to access the g-spot better as well as stimulate the clit (for me PIV is all about the angle), so I'm getting this (ugly but functional!) : http://www.lovehoney.co.uk/product.cfm?p=24998

Also, I've considered combining a small vibe or finger attachement with a (cheaper) curved dildo so there's "something inside". That's what rabbits are for, but you might like the versatility. http://www.lovehoney.co.uk/product.cfm?p=22769

I post this every time someone asks this question, but if you want specific toy reviews check out www.heyepiphora.com/ She's brilliantly crude, and it's a refreshing change from the coy giggly reviews you so often get (but if that's more your style, no worries!). She reviews a lot of big names which you should be able to source from any large online store, my favorite is lovehoney.co.uk (not sure where you are based.)

:)

I'm in the US, but it looks like they have a site for the US as well. Thanks!

I prefer a separate insert able and external stimulator.
I have a rabbit, but if you want to move it around you may lose the vibration. So, IMO, I'd go for a dildo and a vibrator. I've never had much luck with finger vibes or small bullets, but if you're new to toys the might be ok.

I really like vibrators.com.

I've only made one sex toy purchase in my life - from them - but I plan to keep bringing them my business. They have a great privacy policy and give you a surprise gift with your order. I ended up liking the free gift better than the item I actually bought!

Of course, they have more than just vibrators (for which they give helpful size, power, and noise ratings). Accessories, dildos, unusual toys, men's toys, gay and lesbian toys... Check out clearance items for affordable experimentation.

Why just ONE? ;o)

Think about what features you'd like. How thick/thin? Hard/pliable? Textured/smooth? Bulbous or tapered? Male or abstract? Vibrating or non? (Easy to add a C-ring if a dong doesn't come with a buzz.) And then poke around online until something calls to you.

Don't buy them all at once but you'll probably want a variety. Some for internal, some for external. Some for front, some for back. Some for a good hard ride, others for push-pull slow play. I like browsing at Eden Fantasies (.com) because you can limit your choices to certain sizes, materials, etc.

For slow play, I like and recommend the acrylic XTC Pleasure Curve. Good solo or with a partner/oral. Can be used anally as well. I believe they've been discontinued for quite a while but I often see them in the "adults only" section of ebay.

Thanks for the advice! I definitely went for a few things, and I did buy them at once, so we'll see. I didn't want to buy just one thing and be disappointed! EdenFantasys was a cool site. The video reviews and the "view real size" feature were really helpful, even if it's not the prettiest site.

I have a sex toy review blog that you might want to take a look at.

It's hard to tell from your post whether you're in the market for a vibrator, a non-vibrating dildo, or something else, but here are some suggestions of toys I love:

-The Lelo Siri. It's a beautiful luxury clitoral vibe with great, rumbly vibrations. Lelo also makes a toy called the Mia 2 which is cheaper, waterproof, and charges via USB.
-If you want a penetrative vibe, I'd recommend either the Lelo Mona (amaaaazing G-spotting shape, great vibrations) or one of the Fun Factory G4 vibes (amazingly rumbly vibrations).
-As for non-vibrating dildos: anything by Tantus is a good bet, but my particular favorites are the Echo (ripply texture), Adam O2 (somewhat realistic-feeling, with a nice G-spot curve), and Acute (small, but fabulous for hitting the G-spot).
-The Amethyst is a beautiful, inexpensive, versatile glass dildo.

The problem is that I'm not exactly sure what I'm looking for, since I'm relatively new to all of this, but thanks for your suggestions!
ghostyacct 28th-Jan-2013 01:51 am (UTC)
An update: I bought the Acute, which seemed the least intimidating, since this is my first time buying a dildo. I'm excited! Thanks so much for the suggestion!!! The Lelo Mona also looks incredible, but I think I'm going to wait a little bit to make that kind of investment and see what I like with some less expensive toys.

Yay! I absolutely love that dildo. It's probably the one I use most often, actually. I hope you end up loving it too!
kimberkid I am totally loving this one!24th-Jan-2013 06:53 pm (UTC)
http://www.jimmyjane.com/shop/form6-p-85.html

It's completely smooth, completely rechargeable, completely waterproof. Survives a hot tub with no problem. Two different sized ends with independent motors in each side and a whole menu of vibration patterns. If you've got decent muscle control, it's definitely usable as a "strap-in" if you enjoy penetrating someone else.

This thing is seriously wonderful. We have frequent "hot tub parties" at my house, and it gets rave reviews from everyone!

I deff like pinkcherry.ca. Their prices and sales in general make it easy for me to buy multiple toys to test out and not feel super guilty. I second www.heyepiphora.com link, the reviews are fantastic. I will forever personally recommend the hitachi with her whizzard attachment.
