Can you catch a STD from trying on bathing suits or lingerie?

Is it true that if you try on a bathing suit or lingerie in a shop that someone before you tried on (who was infected) you can contract an std? The only two shops in the area where I live do not use those protective liners on their products. I want to get new underwear soon but I've been told that there's a chance of contracting an std from the garments because they aren't washed after each person tries them on. :\

My first thought was: you're supposed to wear your own underwear underneath when trying on clothes... so just keep doing that?

But really, no, there is no way you'll catch an infection from trying on underwear/bathers at a store. That's just not going to happen.

Yes, this. Always keep your underwear on when trying on swimwear or panties.

Seconding goldfoil, you're supposed to keep your own underwear on when trying anything on, for general hygiene reasons. I would wash anything I bought anyway, just to be sure.

Yeah, you keep your own underwear on.

the last time I went underwear shopping, I was told I couldn't even try them on

Well, the liner doesn't really help when you are trying on, since its not like they change the liner between customers either. But anyway, keep your underpants on while trying on, and wash before wearing anything you buy, and you have nothing to worry about.

I recommend buying underwear in packs. That way the underwear will (probably) not have been tried on by anybody. Just to be safe, you can wash them before use.

I don't think you can catch much from used underwear anyway. Most viruses need a moist environment to survive in. Once they leave that environment, they usually die. I'd test the crotch just to make sure it isn't wet before trying it on.

I know its a pain in the butt, but I ALWAYS have cheap panty liners in my purse for this reason. I hate trying on swim suits and such with my underwear on because I can't really judge how they will fit/feel. But I use the panty liners and just toss them when I get home.
