Diflucan Question

Hi VP,

I am on a 10 day course of Augmentin for strep throat. I have taken acidophilus with my antibiotic every day so far but goddamn I am getting a yeast infection. I have a tube of clotrimazole/betamethasone cream for external things which I have been using. Luckily I also happened to have a refill of diflucan at the pharmacy.

My question to you is should I wait to take the diflucan until my course of antibiotics is over or should I take it now? My concern is that if I take it now and go another 6 days on the antibiotic that it might not work at all.

Please give me your advice :)

First of all ::knocks on wood:: I've never had a YI in my life. I had one season-from-hell with multiple infections and was on different antibiotics week after week. After each finished, I took one Diflucan and didn't get a YI. So I would recommend waiting until you've taken the last antibiotic.

OTOH, when you say you're taking your acidophilus with your antibiotic every day, do you mean AT THE SAME TIME? Because you need to separate the two by a few hours, giving each a chance to do its thing.

Perhaps you can also supplement the acidophilus with some of the natural remedies that have been suggested on this comm before.

How do you recommend that I space them apart? I take two augmentin a day. One with breakfast and one with dinner. Should I take the acidophilus at lunch and at bed time?

Yup. That makes the most sense. Obviously, your antibiotic is your first priority, so lunch and bedtime for the probiotic means you're using all the waking hours you have available to you.

My advice, which is tailored totally to me and what I would do , would be to use a monistat 7-day cream treatment while you are on the antibiotics.
I find that the cream soothes so much better than the pill

I have a monistat 1 on standby. The last time I had a yeast beast it was resistant to the monistat. That is why I have not used it yet.

My YI was so bad last time that the skin on my vulva blistered and peeled. The gyno tested me for all the things (STIs) and it came back negative. She then started me on the cream and diflucan. No bueno.

Hmm... Do you always use the 1 day Monistat? In general I avoid that treatment Bc it does not work. My doctor recommends the three day for that reason, but I've found that only the 7 day is really affective for me.(and once, when it was really bad, I did a three day followed by four of a seven day pack for an extra boost, and finally started feeling better). I hope you do too!

Ugh, this happened to me when I got my wisdom teeth removed. I was on an antibiotic and, sure enough, on the third day or so I developed a YI. I bought a three-day treatment of Monistat and actually waited until my antibiotic treatment was over, just to make sure there was no conflict. No one told me to do it that way, but it just seemed to make sense to me. So, the night after I took the last pill, in went the medicine, and it cleared up just fine.

I hope that yours gets better soon!
