Switching... Paragard to Mirena

I've seen a few posts about switching the opposite direction... but I'm considering switching from copper to Mirena. I've had my IUD for almost 9 years now, and am seriously considering switching to Mirena for a lighter period.

Has anyone had experience making this switch? How did it go?

I'm made that switch and I regret, but the conditions were quite different. I had a good experience with the copper IUD, until I got pregnant. After that I didn't feel that I could trust it so I switched methods. But I liked the copper IUD much better. Unlike you, my period wasn't too heavy with a a copper IUD (I had a flexi-t, not a paragard, maybe that made a difference). My period is basically gone with the Mirena, but the lack of period (and hormones generally maybe) have given me a million yeast infections. I've also had worse skin and headaches. I'm getting the IUD taken out asap since I'm so sick of it.

The Mirena would definitely improve you period, but you might get other side effects. Still, if the cost isn't an issue, it's probably worth trying out!
stillsosad Let us know if you do, and how it goes? 22nd-Dec-2010 06:39 pm (UTC)
I'm considering doing this once I finish breastfeeding and will be curiously watching this thread.

I'm considering it too. Wishing there were more folks sharing experiences! OP, if you do it, you'll have to let us know what you think. :)

Welp... for those watching the thread...

I asked my doc about this today*. She said she personally made the switch about a year or so ago, and would (her words) "give up one of [her] kids before [she] gave up her Mirena"... ...which is a pretty strong (joking, of course) endorsement.

I did ask her about/told her I was concerned about side-effects, and she said there were some light/slight PMS stuff that was a bit worse, and her complexion did get a little worse... but overall it was SO SO worth it.

Sooooo... ...after the first of the year, I'll be making an appointment! It's time for my copper to come out, and I can risk not liking Mirena. If worse comes to worse, I can just have nothing--my life would be okay with that option. (In fact, if it weren't for the lack of/lighter periods with Mirena, AND not having to take something/remember something--I'd probably just do nothing once my Paragard came out.)

I'd gone in for something not related--I have bronchitis, just in time for Christmas! yay! steriods and antibiotics=yeast infection, YAY!

I would check out iud_divas and their tags on the side. There should be more than a few entries about this.

Good luck!

OH crap... ... Believe it or not, I'm just kinda a ditz. I joined that community last night and had meant to post this post THERE. I didn't realize it wasn't there until you just said.

I did go back through about a month's worth of posts there, and looked at tags and memories... there seemed to be quite a few about going the OTHER direction, but I didn't see even one on switching from Paragard to Mirena.

I will, however, go and post correctly. I can't* believe I did that!

actucally I can TOTALLLY believe I did that...

Ha, it's cool. I just kinda figured that maybe you didn't know about the comm, cause some VP members don't :)
No worries. Good luck again!
