What does an ovarian cyst bursting feel like?

The background deets: I'm 24, not on any form of HBC and have been told that I "probably" have PCOS, but have never been formally diagnosed.

So last night my boyfriend and I ended up having more intense sex than usual, both in physical intensity and duration. This was right before we went to bed, and as I was laying down, I noticed a weird sharp twinge/pain in my lower abdomen. I wear the low-rise hipster underwear, and the pain was right above the top of my underwear on the right side. Sort of where I imagine my ovaries are, but I really don't know. It was like a 2-3 on the 1-10 pain scale, so I ignored it and fell asleep.

I woke up about an hour later and got up to get a drink of water, and I was hit with this weird crampy, sharp wave of pain all the way across my lower abdomen. I doubled over, more because of the surprise of it than the actual pain. It was painful, but not ER-level painful, so I hobbled back to bed. The pain persisted (although it was better when I was totally immobile), but I managed to fall asleep.

This morning, the pain is still there but less than last night. It is a sharp pain, but achy at the same time. My lower abdomen is also tender to the touch, primarily on the right side. It is worst when I stretch or stand up for long periods of time. Heat seems to help it somewhat, but the pain killers I took this morning didn't seem to have an effect.

Does this sound like an ovarian cyst bursting? Or maybe just a weird sex-related strain (ha)? If the pain continues to get better, can I just chalk it up to a weird thing and not have to go to the doctor? It's already 10x better than it was last night.

It could have been a cyst bursting. I have a friend with Endometriosis and she has had several cysts burst on her. She describes it as doubled-over, brings tears to your eyes, immobilizing pain.

Could have been a particularly sharp ovulation twinge?

this is what I was thinking. It sounds like the ovulation pains I get

i'm no expert, but i had an ovarian cyst burst in 6th grade - it was ridiculous because i didn't even start my period until 8th... idk how these things happen

when it happened to me, i woke up in the middle of the night and it literally felt like someone was stabbing me in the same location you described (except on the left). it was like someone had taken a knife and was twisting it. i basically curled up in a ball and cried and couldn't move - which was saying a lot because even as a 6th grader i was tough as nails. i ended up being achy and having sharp twinges from time to time, so i got an ultrasound done

if your pain disappears and you don't have any twinges or problems, i don't see why you should rush to the doctor, but if it still feels off i'd see someone just to make sure. even if it is a cyst or you have more, sometimes they can be treated with an advil regimen at home over a couple of weeks.

It being on the right side, and a recent scare with my kid and tummy-pain, makes me worry about your appendix. I... would strongly consider calling the doctor and asking if the pattern of pain -- sharp, but much duller the next day -- is anything that they would consider appendix-related.

just about to say that. i just had appendicitis this past august...was NOT pleasant. it got worse over the course of a day to the point where i couldn't stand up...i definitely suggest going to the doctor...

Seconded, never ignore abdominal pain! I had pain in that area about a year ago, and spent a few days telling myself to man up before finally seeing a doctor. By that time, my appendix had burst and turned gangrenous. Be warned!

This happened to me, my boyfriend and I have sex 3-4 times a day (we have lives and jobs but... love each other lol and are totally attracted its crazy) but one day we had like... kitchen sex. All of the kitchen and then into the living room...

We usually take a breather after 45 minutes before going again if we feel like it. But for over an hour we just had crazy, hard sex. Afterwards I had to lay down from the pain in my lower abdomen. Like, it was something I had never felt before and my boyfriend took me to urgent care after talking me into it. He paid for the bill and stuff cause I was concerned. So yeah, it was a flipping UTI. Bladder infection.

Either way I would go to the doctor, just to check. Meanwhile drink a lot of fluids, especially water and just in case go get some pure Cranberry juice. Not the stuff that is cocktail or 27% juice. UTI's feed on sugar so I hope that you are ok!

I was diagnosed with PCOS about 5 years ago, and within a year after diagnosis, had a cyst rupture while I was at work. It was the most intense, white blinding pain I've ever experienced. I was literally knocked off my feet, and ended up curled up on the floor in a ball for about 30 minutes. I couldn't get my boss to let me go to the ER (she was a flat out bitch) but I should have gone. Strangely, after 30 mins the pain dissolved, which I later found out is typical of cyst rupture.

When in doubt, see a doctor. I'd hate for any of us VP readers to discourage you to see one and have it be something that needs tending to. Since you've already considered going, it's probably best you do.

I just had one burst this week actually, haha. You have my symptoms down to a T, except my pain was a little more severe. I was kind of tender and sore on my lower right side, and for about 15 minutes I had very strong pains across my lower abdomen. Even though the pain is mild now, don't shrug it off. If you have any kind of fever, go to the hospital. If not, try to get an appointment with your gynecologist for asap. Most likely you'll have a sonogram to search for fluid or blood from a cyst rupturing and you can also find out if you have any other cysts lurking somewhere.

The only advice I can give you is don't do large amounts of physical activity or lifting and try to avoid sex until you see your doctor.

I had one a couple years ago. It was horrible I was watching my niece. It started the night before I had sex with my ex and the pain lasted days. On Saturday I went for a Mir of my shoulder and got the one of my lower back it says I have a 2cm cyst on my left ovary. I got my period Saturday in the er I was there for a uti I had for a month and already took meds for that didn't work. I get the at least every 3 months. It's just some thing that my family gets I get them most. The cyst are also some thing my family get. Any way after we left the hospital I started getting cramps by the end of the night I was doubled over in pain. I don't know if the cyst burst or if the cyst just is aggregated by my period. I haven't gotten up much cause the pain is horrible. Cyst are not something to play around with they can get rather large. It is now Thursday and I am still in horrible pain. Cyst cause scarring on your ovary which can make it hard to conceive. I had a tubal ligation with plastic clips in 09 I have had 2 cyst (that have been diagnosed). I'm pretty sure I've had 3 now. They are excruciating i wish them on no one. I hope this helps.
