Farting during my period

Not sure if this needed a cut for TMI but it's not too graphic so... does anyone else have a problem with excess gas during their period?  Mine usually lasts only about 2-3 days which is shorter than most people I know, who are closer to 3-5, so I suppose I shouldn't complain, but I get so gassy that I either have to hold it in so it hurts, or keep farting all the time!  I've tried taking Gas-X pills but that doesn't really help, and I thought things like Beano were only for food-related gas, but I get gas during my period even if I haven't eaten in hours.  Does this happen to anyone else?

Yup. I do. I'm also more prone to diarrhea. From what I've read, it's due to hormones. There isn't much that can be done besides trying to stay away from foods that can cause excess gas...at least, as far as I know there isn't.

I have the EXACT same problem, especially this last period. It was so bad I thought I had appendicitis!

I do too!! I've always avoided people the week before and during because I can't help being gassy. That, and the stomach pains are just horrible sometimes.

I'm sorry I can't offer any advice, but I'd really love to see what you all do to help it out.

Yep, lots of gas and super-stinky diarrhea poops here. It's 100% normal, most of us get it, and it is related to the hormones -- I can't recall the exact relationship offhand, but I know another VP member explains it quite well, maybe that member will drop by.

well golly. I never made the connection, with the fact that I'm feeling kind of stinky... But I did notice that instead of cramps, I got gassy-belly.

When your period is due your brain sends little chemical warriors out
in your bloodstream to shake your uterus into action. These chemicals
are known as prostaglandins and their job is to make the muscles of
your uterus contract (cramp) to shake the lining loose and give you
your period or withdrawal bleed.

Some of us make too many prostaglandins, and some of us are very
sensitive to them. In those people the chemicals affect ALL the
muscles in our pelvises. So our guts live in there, our bladder's
there, and they all cramp up, they all get shaken, we wee more, we
fart more, we get the 'period poops' and our periods become a happy
fun week of bodily functions and smelliness. Ah X chromosomes, a gift
and a treasure.

Just another comment from me, like apropos of nothing and just being ranty anyway because my body's trying to expel my skellington out of my cervix, but WHYYYYYYY does nobody ever tell us about this shit in those "YAY, WELCOME TO WOMANHOOD!" presentations at school where the ladies from Tampax or Lillets come and tell you all about periods and then give out free tampons in cute bags?

Why don't they bundle 'feminine hygiene products' (ugh hate that phrase) with free fart-absorbing pads instead of a wet wipe? Damnable swines.

My problem isn't farting so much as terribly loud gut noises.

I can be across the room with my little sister, television blaring, and she can still hear the "RRRRRRRRRR-RRRRRRRGH" battle raging... nevermind those really quiet moments at work, when I'm surrounded by coworkers/customers, and the same ugly noise rears its head. XD

Probably the most embarassing part of my period. (Okay, definitely the most embarassing part.)

Yep, I defintely fart a lot more during my period, lol...
And diarrhea! GOD!
And I've also noticed I generally do more number 2's during the time I have my period.

I get the same thing. I find that caffeine and chocolate help with the cramps (seriously) and that 'period pills' as my teenage boys call them; with pyrimidine (not just caffeine and ibuprofen or acetaminophen) also help with gas pain. I eat a lot of cheese (like a serious amount of cheese) to counter act the diarrhea. Also, I drink water with electrolytes and drink pedialyte to help hydrate myself so I don't get the headaches. It is doable. I used to have to take 2 days off work because of the bathroom running, and pain. But now I can work through it all. Details: I am 33 with 2 kids and my tubes are tied so my insurance won't cover birth control pills, since they paid for my surgery.

I can tell you now that if your body just starts to screw up on you during your period. you can take 1/2 Imodium for the period poos and it works wonders it wont stop it but it will make it a bit more firmer, the next thing to do is have a heating pad at night and lay on it that helps your guts get back into normal working order. it helps ease of that gas but it also works a lot better if you use midal that has a diuretic

I used to have really painful menstrual cramps (pretty much incapacitated for 3 - 5 hours) and mild diarrhea/loose stools during my period but I've substantially decreased my cramps and my diarrhea/loose stools have stopped thanks to fish oil (and eating 1 - 2 cans of sardines a few days before my menstrual cramping is supposed to start).

Some studies have shown that fish oil decreases prostaglandin production (too much causes the menstrual cramps, poop issues, headaches, etc.) and so has helped some women with their menstrual issues, so I think that's why it works for me.

I take Carlson Labs Lemon-flavored fish oil at least 1 - 2 weeks before my period is set to begin (2 teaspoons per day). I got mine from Amazon.com for around $30 and it was absolutely worth the price.

If you have tried everything, try this. I also recommend the "Natural Calm" products if you think you're magnesium and/or calcium deficient because that can sometimes be the cause of bad cramps. The fish oil and sardines have been working so well that I haven't taken it in a while.

The only period issues that I have is that I'm slightly gassy (but I'm always gassy during my period so whatev), a "blah" feeling, and a very, VERY VERY mild amount of cramping on the "cramp day." Like, I can actually function.
