Penicillin vs. NuvaRing?

Hi ladies,
I've been on the NuvaRing for about a year and a half, and I recently got prescribed a week's worth of penicillin. Now, on the pill bottle, it says, "Some antibiotics may interfere with the effectiveness of birth control." And... now I'm a little worried about it. 'Cause I've had unprotected sex twice since starting the penicillin. I don't think I've ovulated yet, so I should be fine, but would penicillin nullify the NuvaRing? And, once I stop taking the penicillin, is it automatically back to normal, or should I have a backup for a little while?
Thanks in advance!

Please don't quote me on this since I'm not an expert, but I think you're ok. The NuvaRing hormones enter your body through your vagina and the penicillin enters your body the way hormonal birth control and other meds do.

What I mean to say is that anything that goes through your blood stream through your vagina doen't get absorbed by whatever organ processes medicine orally, you know? At least that's what makes sense to me. I don't have a NuvaRing so, like I said, I'm not an expert. If it'll make you feel more comfortable, use a condom during the rest of the time you take your penicillin and the 7 days after stopping pennicillin and test in a couple of weeks.

Best of luck to you.

i just looked it up, you're correct! i didnt think about that aspect of things. i read unless the antibiotic is very strong that typically it does not interfere with the nuva ring at all. so to the op; you're more than likely fine!

from what i understand penicillin is one of the antibiotics that does indeed mess with birth control. ideally you should have used a backup method but i'm sure you're aware of that. nobody here can tell you when you ovulated for sure, we can give you a date that you may have ovulated around that but it isn't uncommon for women to be off unless youre religious about charting which even then you still could be off.

on the bright side there were a few websites i found that said that there isn't conclusive evidence that penicillin does mess with your birth control but i did find plenty that said it does reduce the effectiveness of your bc. if you still can i would take plan b, if not if you dont get your period @ the end of the month i'd make sure to take a pregnancy test.

EDIT; nevermind! i forgot completely about the nuva ring being vaginal & didnt think about that. it shouldn't matter @ all if you take antibiotics. perhaps very strong antibiotics MAY effect it but i wouldn't be concerned with penicillin at all. you're fine (:

Since you do not take Nuva Ring orally the antibiotics will not affect it's efficacy.

Agreed with what other posters said.

But mostly, I just love your icon. <3Eddie Izzard<33

Penicillin won't affect the NuvaRing.
