Hydrogen peroxide

I've been reading online about curing BV with hydrogen peroxide? Is this true? Any nasty side effects that I've read (yeast infections) true? Also - does it kill off good bacteria too?

Absolutely. This is how I treated my recent case of BV. I don't have the clinical study I found online handy, but 3 minutes of 30cc 2% hydrogen peroxide left in the vagina cured BV at the same rate as one of the frequently used antibiotics (the one that starts with an M - I forget.. meta-something?) You have to do a hip tilt (as in, lay on your back) to keep it in there. I used a syringe (no needle, of course).

For me, it only worked for about a week before it came back, so I tried it again.. same thing, only a week. Then I'm like SCREW THIS and left it in there for damn near 15 minutes and that did the trick. Yes, it killed all the good bacteria, but antibiotics would do the same thing. I also got a yeast infection after that one (but not after the first two 3-minute treatments, which apparently cure 3/4 of women anyway) - but I vastly prefer YIs - SO much easier to treat.

Metronidazole? (Probably spelled that wrong.)
cailin_t 11th-Mar-2009 04:39 am (UTC)
"azole" makes me think it's an anti-fungal/anti-yeast (monistat, diflucan, terazol, etc. are drugs that all end in "azole," but sure, maybe it's that one, heh. it's whatever the medication in metrogel is.

Metronidazole is correct. Flagyl is the brand name.
arularia 11th-Mar-2009 05:40 pm (UTC)
If it's metrogel then yeah, I'd assume metronidazol. From the reading I did last night, it seems that that and clindamyacin are the go-to drugs for BV.

yep, i see that now. unfortunately, they don't have any higher a success rate than more natural methods like hydrogen peroxide, etc.

So, did you mix a water and peroxide solution up or just use it straight from the bottle? Idk if by 2% you meant you were able to buy a 2% product...just confused on that point.
cailin_t 11th-Mar-2009 01:36 pm (UTC)
most peroxide you buy is 2% peroxide solution, so you use it directly out of the bottle. :)
nickelshoe 11th-Mar-2009 06:39 pm (UTC)
I've always bought 3%. Maybe it depends where you live?
cailin_t 11th-Mar-2009 08:27 pm (UTC)
oh, perhaps. i'm in NJ. the clinical study i read before i tried it out myself recommended 2%. i'd happily try 3%, as the 2% didn't work extremely well for me within the specified time-frame of 3 minutes.

Part of how the good bacteria in your vagina prevent the influx of bad bacteria is by giving off hydrogen peroxide as a waste product. If you're worried about unbalancing your natural flora, follow up the peroxide with an acidophilus treatment.

I've used peroxide for YI and BV and haven't really had any side effects. There was one time that I rinsed with it and felt kind of dry afterward, but I had also laced that particular batch with a few drops of tea tree so I don't think it was the peroxide that did it.

peroxide has worked for yeast for you as well? i may try that, and yes, I'm going to do a pro-biotic treatment right afterwards! i'm so sick of my mutinous vagina.

I always lace my hydrogen peroxide douches with a few drops of tea tree oil. I figure it's gotta help a bit and it smells kinda cool. I don't really like the smell but it's interesting. I douche with about half HP and half warm water, with a bit of TTO after my peroid ends if it's been gunky and stringy--that stuff takes days to work its way out of me.

About, oh, 50% of the time that's the mixture I whip up. Usually it's just fine and things maybe feel a little cool and tingly. Not sure why I ended up dry that one time.

Hydrogen Peroxide worked for my case of BV too. Once every day for five days, when I showered, I'd use a needle-less large syringe to douche with 1/2 HP, 1/2 water solution. After day 5 all symptoms were gone and I've been fine ever since, that was a month ago at least.

There's some research on the topic in medical journals, it seems effective in most people, but only if you're certain it's BV and not Trich or some other infection. :)

Hope this helps! :)

I didnt try the peroxide treatment, but if I ever get BV again I think I will " just because I dont like having to take antibiotics.

I was just prescribed "Flagyl" or "metronidazole' 500 mg 2x daily for my BV.

I use hydrogen peroxide when I get BV. I just dilute it a bit with some water-- no real science to it, and I've forgotten to dilute it before with no adverse effects. I use an oral dosing syringe (most pharmacies will give you a couple for free). I don't have the patience to stand on my head for three minutes, but I usually squirt it up and let it drip out a few times. Sometimes the BV will creep back if I don't really flush it out/let it soak for a while, but I just use the peroxide again if that happens.

I know I've gotten it before by using a dildo that was not at its absolute cleanest. Wiping the the wrong direction or other methods of fecal transference can cause it, too.

Oh, oops! I answered the question posted in the next entry in the second half of my response. Well, a little knowledge never hurt anyone.
