Sex = Wider Hips?

My mom is old school Asian and she grew up with a lot of...Stereotypes and restrictions when it came to relationships/marriage/sex/etc. Earlier in the year, she found out that I'm sexually active and we got into a recent argument about me and boys and sex. And she said that she knew that I had been sexually active a long time ago because last year, when she was measuring my hips for a dress, she noticed how wide they were.

Is this true? Does being sexually active make your hips wider? Personally, I think my mom is being ridiculous and drawing from her old world Asian culture and myths like that. But could there be some scientific truth in it?

TIA!

oh god, i wish. with the amount of sex i've had, i should have HUGE hips.. BUT, i don't. so, i don't think your hips grow. i mean, i'm sure they do a bit, just because your body has gone through a new change, but to my knowledge, having sex won't transform your body like that.

Your icon makes me laugh.
And nope, no babies for me.

I guess my mom is just being weird...

Well...if you got pregnant and delivered your baby vaginally, that COULD make your hips a wee bit wider...but other than that, no.

It's absolutely untrue. However, I would wager a guess that most women start having sex sometime after puberty, and the hips widen during puberty, so there could be a correlation, but there is 100% no cause at all.

I was going to bring up this point as well. It's puberty that causes hips to widen, not sex.

This.

i really don't think sex will make your hips wider.

its funny, because my mom said the same to me. she's always old school asian too. she also told me she can tell if a girl is a virgin or not by the way she walks, lol. she claims to have known when i lost my virginity. my mom cracks me up.

I've heard the walking differently myth!!

LOL my mom told me she would totally know when I lost my virginity...and of course she didn't! They always tell you they can tell...

i agree with the comment two people up. your mom is probably associating puberty with being sexually active because a lot of the time, they happen close together. i know my hips are really wide, but they were definitley like that before i was having sex.

No. My mom is a doctor and she knows that the only way hips change is through puberty (which you could have had, who knows?) or through birthing itself. Sex, however, does nothing.

One of my coworkers a few years ago was oldschool Asian and claimed that she could tell I was still a virgin (at the time) because of how I walked...
I lost my virginity a couple years ago but haven't seen her since to test it. :P
cuposunshine 16th-Feb-2009 02:59 am (UTC)
could it be possible that we walk more "seductively" after losing our virginity??? hehe

Your hips are bone... and their width is dependent on your bone structure down there (from genetics), not what goes in your vag!
ohmygeisha 16th-Feb-2009 05:54 am (UTC)
not quite, hips have a lot of meat on them, too. and hips get wider around puberty and around the time you give birth to a baby, naturally to make it easier to give birth.
missjecka 16th-Feb-2009 06:46 am (UTC)
Yes, but, a baby widens your hips after months of pressure and hormonal changes doing so. Weight gain and bodily changes alter the appearance of your hips, thighs, etc. but not the hips themselves.

lol at the what goes in your vag :)

True though, it's all about genetics and when you began going through puberty :) I have HUGE hips and I'm still a virgin, so god forbid it's true lmao.

Oh, ps, nice icon lol.

Myths like this fascinate me - how did they get started and why do people still believe them? I don't mean that as a criticism of you or your mom at all, but myths and lore like that really interest me.
myrcwood_rose 16th-Feb-2009 03:14 am (UTC)
Ya know, I hear about parents like this from time to time, but I still can't quite believe they exist, or that they actually believe some of this stuff :)

Given that I've always had huge hips, but only became sexually active this year, I'm gonna just go out on a biiiit of a limb here and say that's not true.
indis_earfalas 16th-Feb-2009 11:44 am (UTC)
Pooh. My hips were small before I had sex and they were small after. They got bigger after I had babies, but that's actually a re-distribution of fat and the like.

Honestly, I think some of us just look really guilty after we've had sex for the first time and THAT is how they know. Well, maybe not exactly guilty ... but there seems to be something expressional that some mothers (and grandmothers) can pick up on, especially from families and cultures where its all a bit of a no-no.
imnotyourstarx 17th-Feb-2009 01:23 am (UTC)
haha i totally wish this was true because ive had tons of sex for many years and i am still shaped like a 12 year old boy.

i think your hips *may* get wider if you had been pregnant and/or gave birth, but if youre just having sex, there is no way that would change your body (except maybe your hymen).
