pubic hair smell....bleh

I'm the type of lady that shaves completely every 3 months and then just lets everything grow in (pubes, armpits, legs, etc).

I really love rocking a bush (I think it's campy and kinda fun) but I notice having pubic hair automatically makes me smelly. When I have a full on bush I have about 10 non-smelly moments after a shower. Everything after that is somewhat rank. When I have to pee I can smell my vag a mile away just from pulling down my pants.

When i shave this is never an issue. I hardly have any smell at all, and, whatever I notice is mild and pleasant.

I actually went to the gyno cause I thought I had an infection, but, she said everything looked and smelled normal. She even gave me a vag swab to sniff, I have to agree that there was no unusual odor.

Is this just something unavoidable when you have a ton of pubic hair? Will it always smell really strongly?

I also have to pee every 2 seconds, I feel part of the smell may be pubic hair+pee. Idk, I can't shower every time I have to pee. Shaving works alright, and solves the problem, but I don't really like to shave to begin with.

Any suggestions????? I want to be able to rock a bush and not be smelly.

It's a bit early for my brain to work, so I hope the anatomical terms I use are correct.

I had the exact same problem, which was a major issue when I had to do my laundry at a landromat and was trying to maximize the number of uses I could get out of my pants (it got to where it was typically just one).

I don't know how you feel about increased shaving/trimming, but the only thing I found that really works is to remove the hair on the outer labia. You can still the hair on the mons as bushy as you'd like, but it keeps pee from getting in the labia hair. This took care of the problem for me.

If you're not down with shaving, maybe a pre-moistened wipe of some kind? (I'm a bit wary of those near my vulva, but I've been extra prone to YIs this year, so I may just be paranoid.)

"the only thing I found that really works is to remove the hair on the outer labia."

Me too. When I shave I get my ass and my labia, then leave the hair on top (and trim it). It cuts down smells by like 95%.

I just feel like there has to be some full bush secret out there, I don't think every lady in 1964 smelled vaggy.

sageautumn 21st-Jan-2009 02:41 pm (UTC)
Maybe the definition of what smells vaggy changed?

Dunno. I just trim everywhere except my ass, which I shave.
zu_zu_zu_zu_zu 21st-Jan-2009 06:22 pm (UTC)
whoa, how does one shave their own ass?!

bush=campy is the best reason I've ever heard for keeping a bush
sageautumn *laughs* CAREfully!21st-Jan-2009 06:29 pm (UTC)
Squat, apply conditioner/shampoo/whatever, then reach backward... carefully do one side, then the other.

I'd guess almost anyone could... I'm a _big_ girl, and I can.

And... I've had a bush because some men prefer it. I currently have a... shrub? *laughs* closely trimmed... because shaving hurts and it makes me more sensative. (Which, for me, is NOT a good thing)

And heck, some people have a bush because it's a bother to shave/trim/etc.
sageautumn 21st-Jan-2009 06:33 pm (UTC)
Heck, I just read lower in the comments... there's a lot of bushy types commenting.

What you all must do is---if it's THAT bad as you admit--- take a shower or a birdbath because if you can smell yourself then hose down because we all can smell it. We just smell worse than men. WE are very high maintenance is all.
okayprettygood 21st-Jan-2009 01:24 pm (UTC)
I've had the same problem, and I haven't found a solution yet. The best thing I've found so far has been using unscented baby wipes, but that's not ideal either.
zanylikethat 21st-Jan-2009 02:07 pm (UTC)
I use a beard trimmer to trim down the hair on my labia, because I've noticed the same problem and I dislike shaving the vag for numerous reasons. However, my beard trimmer (about $10 at Target) has made my life way easier, courtesy of removing the evil hairs, but without any of the unpleasant ingrowns/itch/etc I generally associate with shaving, as it leaves them short, but much less prone to collecting scent.
astaciamorrigen 21st-Jan-2009 02:11 pm (UTC)
Instead of a wipe, maybe use a warm wet washcloth to wipe the entire area after you pee? That might cut down on the smell.

The only other thoughts I have are what type of panties and pants/ skirts do you typically wear? If you're not already you could try switching to all cotton panties and pants that are more loose in the crotch area so that sweat doesn't build up and cause any odor. Or maybe wear loose skirts more often for maximum air flow.

Hope that helps. :)

i find that 2 things exacerbate the smell for me:

1)the hair around the perineum ESPECIALLY. I really have to wash my taint gewd or else it just is wrong. Shaving helps, but it's an area i must use a cleanser and a washcloth and go to town.

2)Dampness. If i have a bush and i just towel-dry it, it's really not good enough. I use a hair dryer on low setting, and if i can still smell something unpleasant, i'll give myself another go with the washcloth, and dry it again.

I use a little bit of deoderant on the crease of my thighs, at the bikini line and it helps a lot. I think that a lot of the smell is caused by sweat and bacteria build up in the hair. Other than that, I just trim it a little when it starts getting jungly. If you're thinking that the smell might be from pee in the vag hairs though, try sitting so that your outer labia spread open a little, of spread them open with you fingers before you let loose, that should help keep it out of your furs.
everyday22 21st-Jan-2009 05:52 pm (UTC)
THIS! Deodorant isn't just for armpits. Hell, I use it everywhere. I don't care if that makes me weird, because I always smell nice!
atalanta0jess 21st-Jan-2009 06:33 pm (UTC)
It is worth noting though, that antiperspirant isn't particularly good for you, so if you go this route, it might be a good idea to use a deodorant that does not have any antiperspirant in it.
sickofyourbs 21st-Jan-2009 09:09 pm (UTC)
Agreed. There are natural deodorants out there (usually made from mineral salts) that don't stop the sweat, but they do stop the smell. My husband uses one. You can usually get them at health food stores.
I keep my Secret around, just because I tend to sweat quite a bit, and I like my antiperspirant. But then again, I don't use it on my crotch, either.
jadeserenity 21st-Jan-2009 11:18 pm (UTC)
Also just regular baby powder or something of the same substance works just fine, and doesn't have the health concerns, as far as I know.
Kait McNeill Hard luck30th-Aug-2016 11:00 am (UTC)
Actually talcum powder in the vaginal area is known to cause cancer. Deodorant probably has less risks.

i havent shaved in years. i've only been bothered by the smell since starting the nuvaring which i blame on that. but to stop any real like... buildup of grossness i trim the spot at the top of the labia where they meet. near the clit. that always tends to be a problem bush spot for me. but also trimming the hair that grows out and over (when i let it run free my bf likes to call it a "natural chastity belt" because they could just meet and never let him in ever again) and that helps with the smell. because right now my problem is the nuva throwing off my ph and then the stank of confused discharge getting all caught up in my jungle :-D

hope that helps. ;-)

Things to try:

1. Cotton undies
2. Drinking lots of water to reduce the concentration of both urine and vaginal secretions
3. Wiping with a warm washcloth after using the bathroom
4. Trimming once every 2 weeks or so (takes me 5 minutes with a big ol' pair of scissors) so you still have the look without the bulk

But honestly, I never do more than trim once a month or so and only get a really powerful smell if I go more than 3 days without showering/bathing (i.e. camping). The rest of the time the scent (which is nice and vagina-y) hangs out in the vagina and I can't smell myself until I touch myself first and smell my fingers.

you have two kinds of sweat glands- sudoriferous ( sweat) glands and sebaceous ( oil) glands. sebaceous glands are ONLY in hair follicles.. ever wonder why your pits stink but your sweaty hands don't? You have no sebaceous glands in the palms and soles of your feet, and the sebaceous glands are smaller on say your forearms.. but where the hair is coarser, armpits, chest ( mostly on men of course) and the pubic area, the sebaceous glands are bigger. The sudoriferous glands produce a more watery type sweat.. both however can create smell.. the larger sebaceous glands just produce thicker, and more of the stuff that you will smell.. why does it smell? Bacteria. anaerobic bacteria to be exact. Think about it..nice dark moist place with "food" = sebaceous discharge..= smell.. and like someone mentioned earlier.. this smell can be very attractive to the opposite sex.. so as the pubes grow in.. that sebaceous sweat has something to cling to. So if you don't like the smell. keep shaving.. otherwise shower twice a day.. just remember, sebaceous glands excrete this stuff to keep your hair moist and soft and shiny (head AND pubes).. so washing too much could be a problem too..

What a cool explanation! Thanks!

I prefer to stay all bush, all the time. The things I've done to cut down on my humanimal scents are to spread my labia when I pee so I don't get my fur wet, and once daily clean out the hairs that line my labia with a damp washcloth. I actually hold the hairs between the washcloth and pull down on them. (I hope that makes a little bit of sense.) Like, separate the hairs and clean them off well.

Good luck!
confused90 21st-Jan-2009 07:20 pm (UTC)
Did you ever consider that you don't *actually* smell bad? Like, the smell is probably just regular off-the-shelf vagina smell. And I have NEVER smelt it on someone else. EVER. And if the only time you're noticing it is when you're taking your pants off, then chances are the only time someone else is going to notice is when they take your pants off. And by that point, that smell that you want rid off so much will be working its pheromone-y magic.

You've had alot of other good practical suggestions, so I just thouht I'd add that, especially as you mentioned that you like having a bush (I don't LIKE it, but I've never bothered with doing anything and I've never had any complaints!)
acrophilia 21st-Jan-2009 08:50 pm (UTC)
my thoughts exactly. I've never smelled a vag-y smell on anyone else. And, seriously, if it's just a vag smell and not a yucky infected smell, I wouldn't worry about it. There's enough of it floating around in the atmosphere that people are used to it and don't realize it.

If you like it, keep it! I HATE the feeling of regrowth so I let mine run wild and free. I do do a little bit of grooming during the summer (cause nobody like stuff hanging out of a bathing suit) or when I know I'll be swimming. I consider myself fortunate that my beau looooves pubic hair.
abalone99 21st-Jan-2009 09:37 pm (UTC)
If you really don't want to shave/trim maybe try using a dusting powder of some sort? It'll help absorb the sweat and if you get one that's slightly scented it might also help mask some of the odor. You could use everything from baby powder (just don't get it inside you (also, IN BEFORE OMG DISCUSSION OF TALC haha) or corn starch or something nicer. I really like the dusting powders that Lush makes. No testing on animals, corn starch based, and smell lovely w/o overpoweringly cloying, perfumey, or one-not. The one I really like is called Silky Underwear and it's made just for that! I use it especially when I'm feeling sweaty or I knot I'm going to be hot and sometimes just cause. I keep my hair down there shaved or really short, so I'm not sure how long the scent would last on you, but it lasts on me throughout most the day if I recall correctly. Anyway, might be worth giving it a try before you have to choose between bush and smelling non-vagy (which is perfectly acceptable, just something you clearly aren't too keen on for yourself).
smile_along 22nd-Jan-2009 01:24 am (UTC)
I used Silky Underwear from Lush as well, in the summer.

abalone99 22nd-Jan-2009 01:44 am (UTC)
SUCH great stuff! I love the cocoa bits in it and the nice soft gentle smell. In the summer I love to layer it on after taking a cool shower with Big Calm. It's really nice.

Ditto! I love, love, love Silky Underwear. I use it year-round because I find the scent so delightful.
jadeserenity 21st-Jan-2009 11:19 pm (UTC)
Hair's function is to hold in smell, so, yah, I dunno what you can do about this. It's just the way our bodies work, we're supposed to smell! And the smell of a healthy vagina in particular, works to turn (heterosexual) men on, so I wouldn't worry about it much. If you like the bush, just go with it.

Hi ladies! It is my first time here and I would like to wish you a very nice day.
Sorry for invade your space here but I would like to say that pubic hairs or bald vagina are all beautiful. Well, girls are wonderful and the most beautiful flowers created in this world. Talking about vagina, unless you have an infection I can confirm there are many men who like the smell of your vagina (they do not say it). Even you say bleh... it is normal. Most of men like me in Brazil for example, love the smell of a vagina. I should say the smell of a woman.
I love when a girl is sweaty. It is not dirty It is sensual. It is a sensation I could not describe... I feel so excited when my girl is sweaty. I love to feel the smell of her vagina when it is sweaty or after she pees... It includes that smell in her panties.
Of course we love bald, trimmed or bush vagina, but the smell of it is wonderful.
My best regards to all of you...

I found this forum while searching for info on this 'condition' on google. Yesterday I had sex with a girl with smelly pubic hair. I've had sex with 5-6 unshaved girls before and never experienced this. It is not normal, it does not smell vagina-y and I hate it. I know how a healthy vagina smells and I like it. This is nothing like this. The odor comes from the pubic hair and not from the vagina. It smells like ... an old smelly hat that has never been washed, but worse.
I don't know if I will have the guts to tell her...

Use baby wipes or any type of "wipe" for that area down there after you use the toilet and periodically throughout the day.

Also, hair promotes sweat. It promotes it and then locks it in! You're a woman so I understand you wanting some hair there, but, how about a nice manicured landing strip. That way, it isnt all unruly and doesn't encourage unessesary sweating and there wont be enough hair to lock it in.

Plus, it look's prettier (in my my man's opinion)

Hope this helps.
