late periods/ovaries(?) hurt, kind of scared

So I'm planning on seeing a gynecologist soon (I haven't been to one since I was 17, except for when I got tested for STD's at a Planned Parenthood after a few nights of unprotected sex with a guy friend a couple summers ago. I'm just now on health insurance for the first time in a long time, so that's mostly why I haven't been to one.) But I wanted to ask on here now because I'm pretty worried.

The past few months, my period has been coming a week later than normal. Instead of about 30 days between, it's been 37. I've been thinking of getting on birth control to regulate it because it's pretty annoying, and I've always had heavy periods anyway, which is very annoying. (I've always been kind of hesitant to get on hormonal birth control, though... I just don't want to mess with my body's natural way of things.)

But this month, the cramps feel completely different, like instead of normal cramps, I can feel a separate pain in each ovary, or what I assume are my ovaries. The weird pains seemed to start as soon as I started my period, two nights ago.

If it helps, I am 24, sexually active with my fiance (I've had two partners besides him) and I've never been pregnant.

Oh yeah, and I was also wondering if it would matter if I went to the gyno while on my period... I don't know if that would mess with any tests or make it harder for them to diagnose me.

I'm sorry I can't give any advice about the pain, but about going to the gyno while on your period; I think the only way to find out if it's ok is to call the doctor's office and ask. I think different doctors have different practices on this.

I have ovarian cysts, and I can feel my ovaries hurt when the cysts are getting bad (right before and during my period). I'm not aware of any tests that would be complicated by your period; I've been in to the gyno for tests several times while on mine. Best of luck!

Sometimes your cycle just changes - mine has made quite a few adjustments like that over the years, going from super irregular to every 34 days or so and back to super irregular, then to about 25 days. I went on HBC in part because of that, but changes in the length of your cycle certainly don't have to mean that there's a problem. :)
