sore with dark red/purple center

Alright, ladies... I am Concerned. Yesterday, a sore spot appeared on my labia, very swollen and quite uncomfortable. It is raised and red with a dark purple/red spot in the center. Nothing like this has ever appeared anywhere on my body before. I get herpes sores on my mouth (I've had them since I was a baby) but I have always been insanely careful not to touch them and spread the sores, so I doubt that the sore is a transfer from my mouth. It also doesn't look or feel like the cold sores I get. I am a virgin, I have never been sexually active in any sense, no one's hands except mine have been down there. The sore spot is a lot more sore and swollen today than it was yesterday, and I'm really worried. Any insight?

Inner or outer labia?

Inner!

Is it located in the back of your labia, closer to your rear end?

No, it's towards the top, just under my clit sort of... on the inner side of my labial "lip".

Hm. The only thing I can think of is herpes really. Maybe you should see a doctor.

I don't really know what that is but I had something that sounds awfully similar. Same thing happened, weird painful mystery bump. The person that I am I just left it alone and after weeks it actually turned out to be some kind of pimple, like a whitehead. To this day I have no idea what or where it came from. It happened to me once more and that's it.

Who knew a vag can get whiteheads..

well it is skin and it has pores so i guess anything is possible down there?

I have something like those on my legs, right where the groin meets the thigh - I'm pretty sure they're boils, but I've never heard of one on the inner labia.

Try a hot compress - if it's sore as all hell it may be that.

Good luck!

I don't really have any ideas about what it could be, but I just wanted to suggest that if it doesn't feel better or go away in a day or two, and especially if it gets worse, you might want to call your doctor. Tons of different things can cause ouchy bumps on your vulva, many of which are not anything to be concerned about; personally, for my own peace of mind (because I am a worrier), I might make an doctor's appointment if it doesn't improve in a few days. :)

Just as a quick note, not all of us on VP, not even all of us with vulvae and/or labia are "ladies." Using a non-gendered term might be more welcoming to and accurate of who's really represented in VP. :)

As for suggestions, you might want to check out the Vulvapedia article on bumps and cysts. Ingrown hairs sound like they could fit that description (and some folks do have hair on their inner labia); you might also want to read up on boils to see if anything there rings a bell. At any rate, I'd suggest applying hot compresses for a day or two and monitor what happens. If the heat seems to help, stick with it. If it doesn't seem to be doing any good, and especially if things seem to be getting worse, then it might be time to seek medical attention.

As someone else mentioned, it could be an ingrown hair.
Your description-- a gross looking, reddish, purple bump-- sounds like exactly what I had, except mine was on the outer labia in the middle of my hairs. If its just an ingrown hair, it should go away in a week or so. It should help to put a warm rag on it whenever you can, just to loosen it up, and it'll pop and go away on its own.

I get things that sound exactly like what you're describing often. My OB/GYN told me that sometimes they're blocked ducts, sometimes they're boils, and sometimes they're just good, old fashioned bacteria-in-a-pore type pimples. Try to resist the urge to pop it yourself. Mine usually pop on their own after a day or two - warm, moist area they're in to begin with, brings them to a head, etc. - and release very dark purple, sludgy, sometimes with pus or chunky blood in copious amounts. If yours does this, don't panic.

However, if it does this and it's accompanied by a fever or extreme smell, go see your doc ASAP.
