UTI & Herpes?

Hiii All,

So I posted on here last week about my herpes story. I am pretty sure what I thought was the flu was my first official outbreak. I went to the primary care doctor and she gave me an antiviral that they typically use for the flu - not thinking that this may have been an outbreak. I believe the antiviral helped clear the outbreak up very quickly, which is amazing. But she also did a lot of lab work and called me a few days ago to say my urine analysis had blood in it.

I had noticed I was having difficulty passing urine, but assumed it was due to the outbreak. Then this morning I woke up with a full blown UTI. It's not too painful yet, but if I didn't get an antibiotic it was on it's way. Thankfully I called the doc and they called in a script for me.

Now for my questions:

1.) Could the outbreak of herpes caused me to get a UTI??? I have never had a UTI before but somehow I knew that is exactly what this is, based on research and the lab results. And since it was my first ever herpes outbreak followed by my first ever UTI, I was curious.

2.) Also, when you have a UTI, aside from the burning when you pee, frequency of needing to go, do your lips of your vagina like...ACHE?? Because mine are so tender.

3.) I have read that after 2 days of antibiotics a mild UTI could clear up. My long distance boyfriend is coming on Friday and I want to be able to have sex! If we're careful and I'm still taking the antibiotic, is this ok??

Thanks in advance for your imput!!

OK, I am NOT a doctor, so what I am going to say is only from my personal experience as a woman who gets frequent UTIs.

2) I have not experienced this.

3) My GP has told me that it is safe to have sex with a UTI and hopefully with antibiotics your infection will have cleared up by then. However, I have found that sex with a UTI can be pretty uncomfortable so if you are not %100 by Friday, I would take it easy and just listen to your body. On my doctors advise, I've also found that urinating immediately after any kind of intercourse lessens the chance of my getting a UTI or that one on the mend will come back

Hmmm... I wonder what the aching is then! It's really bugging me out over here.

Yeah, I've heard the thing about peeing right after sex, which would probably explain why this is my first ever UTI. And it doesn't seem to hurt internally too much, just the urethra is what is really bothering me. I guess I'll let the antibiotics run their course and HOPEFULLY they take away the aching too!

Ahhhh ok so I guess I assumed since the discharged stopped that the outbreak was over... perhaps it's still there some? Or at least the aching is. That makes me feel a bit better.

My oral outbreaks were usually preceded by my lip getting puffy and... Well, not quite sore, but certainly non-comfortable. (Most like the time I got poison ivy all over my face. My regular skin itched. My lips... tingled annoyingly.) So I could see the HSV perhaps giving you some aches? Perhaps your immune system is fighting it hard.

(PS: when your cat has just walked through a field of broad-leafed green things, it may not be a good idea to pick him up and rub your face in his tummy-fur. Unless you are sure it's not poison ivy he strolled through. Just sayin'. >_> )

I can't speculate about a connection/causation regarding herpes outbreaks and UTI's, but I did get a UTI at the same time as my first herpes breakout and I had never had a UTI before or have had one in the three years since. Maybe there is something to that.

The lips of your vagina may still ache from the herpes outbreaks, that's pretty standard for me. Or maybe you're just generally more sensitive down there from frequent and painful urination?

Ahhh you made me feel so much better! I am thinking a UTI may be brought on by an outbreak if the body's defenses are down? I'm not sure. But it makes sense. I'm glad someone else has felt my pain!

I am pretty sure that the lips aching is from the outbreak, as I said up there I just assumed it was over because the discharge stopped, but it's def. sore. Not as much as it was, but it's there! The UTI is just adding to the discomfort. :(

Thank you!!

Whatever the reason, it should be illegal for these two things to go together! Herpes sores + peeing ever five seconds made me one very unhappy camper, as if I wasn't going through enough.

Technical, no however painful urination with white blood cells, red blood cells and other nasty stuff can appear in the UA during an outbreak. The key will be if the culture of the UA comes back positive/negative.

2.) Also, when you have a UTI, aside from the burning when you pee, frequency of needing to go, do your lips of your vagina like...ACHE?? Because mine are so tender.

No, that does sound more like a STD of some sort.

2 days is enough to clear up a UTI but you will get 3 full days of antiboitics if it is an UTI.

The first outbreak of herpes (called primary) can be HORRIBLE. I can be flu + uti like problems. Anti-virals help.
