HIV prevention

I just found an article about a post HIV exposure treatment at motherjones.com. According to the article the treatment is given as soon as possible after exposure to HIV and works to stop the virus from actually spreading in the body. It is mostly reserved for healthcare professionals who are exposed to HIV in medical accidents. I find it fascinating that there is a treatment available to help prevent HIV from taking hold if a person has been exposed, yet it is not made readily available to the general public in all areas.

I'm wondering what kind of protest/mass action could be done to influence the availability of this treatment. Ideas?

Of course it is not being made readily available to the general public, as diseases like HIV, cancer and the like are being used as population controllers, and also to target minority communities. HIV can be cured completely, I believe, but then all those scientists and research facilities would shut down and people would be out of jobs. Not to mention, people would probably be more careless about having unprotected sex and IV drug use if they knew they could be cured.

Huh.....

any evidence for that?

I'm in biology, and there are tons and tons of people out there with jobs that are completely unrelated to health that are making plenty of money. Making advances generally secures your position as a scientist. There are plenty of problems to tackle in this world, and the best way to get money is generally to show that you are capable of tackling them.

I think any scientist would sacrifice their job - hell, maybe even their own lives - to save the lives of millions. Just becuase pharmaceutical companies are made out to be the big bad wolves of the world does not mean they would ever dive so low as to hide the solutions to the world's problems.

Why do you think scientists and researchers go into those fields? They're humans just like the rest of us.

orly?

How can HIV be cured?
lady_alyria 9th-Jun-2008 04:14 am (UTC)
By injecting money straight into the blood stream. At least that what it said on South Park.

honestly, I think that is pretty insulting to the people who are working really hard trying to find cures to those illnesses. I'm sure plenty of researchers have lost loved ones to AIDS or cancer. They would have to be pretty fucking heartless to withhold the cure from their loved one if such a cure actually existed.
salsuginous 9th-Jun-2008 03:10 am (UTC)
Are you kidding me?!? Are you telling me that I've spent the past 10 years of my life just pretending to work so I can keep getting grant money?!? Do you think I or my team or my PI is just ROLLING AROUND and masturbating in wads of money that the NIH just throws at us and gleefully congratulating each other every few minutes that another minority is killed because we're supressing a cure for the field of cancer that I work in? Seriously??!??

Well, holy crap. Somebody must have forgotten to send us the memo. We're doing it all wrong. :(

I don't know why I bother. Anyone who talks about "cancer" like it is some monolithic disesase that can just get a universal "cure" obviously has no friggin' clue what they are talking about.

Have fun fighting the good fight. Or whatever you are doing. In the meantime, I'm actually going to be putting my time and effort and days where it counts--trying to do my little part to help save lives.

So out of curiosity, what do you think all those scientists do all day?
atalanta0jess 9th-Jun-2008 03:53 am (UTC)
Yeah, seriously, right? They just sit around and do pretend research. ;)
dirtynumbangel 9th-Jun-2008 03:18 am (UTC)
I... what? Are you fucking serious? Do you have any evidence whatsoever for this ridiculous and insulting 'thought'?

Do you have any idea the mutation rate of HIV? It can't be cured because by the time you throw drugs at it the bastard has already mutated into something else the drugs can't kill. That's why cocktails are the standard of care (it's harder to evolve 3 resistance mutations than 1) but why once the virus is out of control there's very little that can be done.
hamburgerjack 9th-Jun-2008 03:39 am (UTC)
XD Oh, oh yeah and 9/11 was an inside job, aliens exist, there are reptile people living under the earth, the Pope is still alive, Obama is the anti-Christ and there are Alligators in the sewers.

:3
odetta_to_detta 9th-Jun-2008 03:40 am (UTC)
You obviously know nothing about the nature of these diseases and thus why there are no known cures if you can spout off such nonsense.
gambitsworld 9th-Jun-2008 04:04 am (UTC)
It has been, at least here in Canada. Most major centers here have a needle stick response team.

The idea of hitting a possible infection with massive doses of anti-retrovirals is to keep the HIV virus from getting a foothold so your body can fight it. It has to be done within 48 hours, best if within 12. The drugs do not work all the time, and it is a month in hell (it's not just a couple of pills) where you are so sick you feel like you are going through chemo. Then you have to wait another 5 months to find out if it worked or not. If you were ever exposed to enough agent to infect you in the first place that is.

There is still no cure once the virus has taken hold.
