VCH versus HCH

Hi everyone!

I've been considering getting my clitoral hood pierced for a while now, but I can't really choose between horizontal or vertical. I've been trying to list pros and cons for both of them, and I'd like some advice/anecdotes/reassurances. I've always been nervous about needles and piercing, and I really want to make sure I don't screw something up.

- I like the way it looks the best, especially with a curved barbell. What does having a barbell feel like versus having a cbr or a circular barbell?
- I've heard that having the receiving tube inserted under the hood (if the piercer uses one) hurts a lot; does it really?
- What sort of risks are involved with a VCH regarding loss of sensitivity? Is it because of the placement, or does it happen because the piercing wasn't done right or wasn't cared for afterwards?

- While I don't like it as much as the VCH, I still find it quite cute
- How easy is it to get caught on things (seams, underwear, etc.)? This is one of the things I'm really concerned about with an HCH
- How does stimulation from an HCH/cbr differ from stimulation with a VCH/barbell?
- Is it easier to masturbate/receive oral with an HCH since you can (I assume) "flip" it up off the clitoris? Or is that defeating the purpose?

Also, what "anatomy requirements" are there for both piercings? I've heard of things like the "Q-tip test" (I passed that!) and things about blood vessel distribution.

Stimulation is a secondary benefit to me; the main reason I want to get my clitoral hood done is for aesthetic reasons (i.e. they look sexy :D). If I don't get any extra pleasure out of it that's fine, but I don't want to lose a lot of sensitivity. I don't have any interest in any other genital piercing, so if it turns out that a hood piercing isn't right for me anatomy-wise or for other reasons I won't be getting it.

Right now I'm leaning towards a VCH, but yesterday I was all for getting an HCH. I already know where I'm going (Tantrix in Saskatoon; very friendly, clean and popular) and which [female] piercer I'm going to. I just need to pick what I want!

i don't have experience with an hch, but i do have a vch and i can tell you that i can just push the barbell up if it's in the way and it sort of...gets stuck under my hood until i push it back down. convenient! also, the recieving tube didn't hurt at all. the needle fucking did, though, but i'd had bad past experiences with it, so i tensed up WAY more than i normally would've. easiest piercing i've ever healed, though.
oh, and i have a curved barbell, but i can't imagine wearing a circular barbell or a cbr in it...it just seems like it would get caught on things. like pants. no, thanks!

I know, I'd seen some photos of VCHs with cbrs or circular barbells, and it didn't look great D:

Did your piercer advise you to do salt soaks as well as washing with antibacterial soap? Someone else I talked to said hers told her that just flushing it with saline solution (I think she used contact solution o_O) was ok.
revolte_avecmoi 12th-Mar-2008 07:21 am (UTC)
contact solution! omg! actually, he told me just to wash it w soap in the shower, and then to pee afterwards. which sounds silly, but it makes sense once you think about it; you're not supposed to use soap to wash your ladybits at all, as it contributes to risk of infection, so the urine will sort of..wash it out. i don't remember if he mentioned ss soaks or not, but the gist was basically - KEEP IT CLEAN and also LEAVE IT THE FUCK ALONE.
mind you, this is from a reputable piercer (dominick at starlight tattoo in belleville, nj), bot some crazy guy with a fetish, lol.

I did salt soaks because I'm very prone to YIs and didn't want to get one from the antibacterial soap. If you do use soap a good trick is to use a water bottle with a spout to wash off. It really gets in there and you can use a steady stream. I ended up doing the salt soaks for maybe 3-5 days? After that I left it alone. Genital tissues have a lot of blood flow, so they heal nicely without too much fussing.

A curved barbell in a VCH will sit the nicest in your pants :) Also, if you can pass the q-tip test, you have no reason to assume the receiving tube will be anything but perhaps a bit cold. Since you prefer the look of a VCH, and have no glaring reason not to choose that one, vertical has my vote! Plus, the stimulation will likely be much better, since the shaft of the barbell will in in contact with some of the shaft of your clit. A HCH has little to no contact with the clit itself, so many women feel far less sensation from it.

You seem to like the idea of a VCH, so I'd say go with that! In terms of sensations, the vch would be better any way, since the bottom bead of a barbell sits right on your clitoris.
I've never heard anything about loss of sensation though. I don't feel much anyway, so my vch is really only something nice and sparkly for my ladybits :P
As for the receiving tube, it wasn't pleasant, but it wasn't painful. The needle really hurt- for a second. Then there was nothing, no pain afterwards or anything.
It was the easiest piercing I've ever healed- no cleaning aftercare, just rinsing it with water in the shower. Your body takes care of keeping itself clean. I would definitely NOT use soap though, that could cause a yeastie!

I'd go with the VCH personally. Good that you passed the q-tip test. I've never heard of VCH causing loss of sensation - mine didn't increase nor decrease in sensation.

The other thing to consider is whether your vag is an innie or an outie. If it's an innie, then you can really only go the VCH, because a HCH will get twisted etc between your labia.

Good luck and let us know how you go!

this might be a really idiotic question, but... innie or outie? i'm so curious to know what you mean! xD

i have a VCH...i actually wear a 5/16ths straight barbell in it. shorter is definitely better in terms of not getting caught on stuff.

for me, the recieving tube did hurt, but i have an EXTREMELY sensitive clitoris (in both my opinion and that of others who have visited the area) and the "cold metal on my bits" thing was...OW.

they're more sensitive while healing, but overall everything pretty much goes back to how it was. loss of sensitivity is a myth, really....worst case scenario, if you feel that you're getting less sensitive, all you have to do is change jewelry.

i had a verticle with a curved barbell, it went with the natural shape/ curve. i loved it! i think a horizontal would not 'flow' as well and be uncomfortable.

I have an HCH because my hood wasn't loose enough for a VCH to work. That being said, it doesn't get caught on things, although my outer labia kinda cover it a bit. I don't know how the sensation differs compared to a VCH (since I don't have one), but it did make my orgasms way more intense, which I had been skeptical about. Every thing I had read said that the HCH was purely ornamental, but something about my anatomy must have just clicked with it, and it blows my mind. Heh. You can flip it off the clitoris if you want, but I don't because it kinda defeats the purpose, as you put it.

I don't think there are any anatomy requirements per se for the HCH, almost everyone can get one, but that's a question better answered by your piercer, since they know what they're looking for.

I don't have either, but I, like you, am contemplating a VCH. It seems exciting<3

you posted like 18,000 questions and i can't imagine answering them all but here are some helpful links:

also, this question may be more suitable for a reputable community like bodymods or _modified.

also, i had a VCH. i self-pierced it. the receiving tube shouldn't be painful unless you have a really tight clitoral hood. there aren't really risks involving loss of sensitivity, unless your piercer somehow pierces your clitoris/your clitoral shaft by accident.. but that seems highly unlikely. also, i would ask your piercer to see a portfolio of piercings she's done. look at the female genital piercings and make sure the placement is proper, the jewelry is suitable, etc. also, getting a VCH or an HCH is dependent on your anatomy, so your piercer should be able to distinguish which is more suitable for you. the "rings of desire" page i linked to above should help you.
