Can you shorten your period?

I was going to make a post asking whether or not there was anything you could do to delay your period, but lo and behold, I got it this morning.

Normally, my period lasts somewhere between four to six days. Unfortunately, my boyfriend is coming home this weekend, and I'm not interested in having sex while on my period. Is there anything I can possibly do in order to have my period end before Saturday?

This is probably stupid, but I haven't seen my boyfriend in a very long time!

I did a search for you and came up with this post: http://community.livejournal.com/vaginapagina/5766496.html

Seems like it's a 'no.' But I speak from experience in saying that period sex is not yucky and gross! In fact, there are reasons I might enjoy it more. But hey, maybe I'm a minority in that realm.

I agree, period sex is awesome!
mammothali 12th-Apr-2007 01:22 am (UTC)
Yeah, it can be messy on the heavier days but oh man do I get horny when I'm on mine.

The first two days I normally won't because the blood is thin and clots quickly (making me dry up quickly). But the rest of the week there seems to be more mucous mixed in with the blood, which makes it a much better lubricant.

To the OP: Once you get your period there's really no way to stop it. You could immediately start taking HBC pills but it would probably take a few days for them to stop your period. In the future if you want more control over when you get your period, being on pill/ring/patch gives you lots of freedom to skip your period when you please.

Sadly, no. But you can make future periods shorter by using hormonal birth control.
moonbunni 12th-Apr-2007 01:18 am (UTC)
The short answer, is no. As others have said.

The soy tip on there, make sure you're absolutely not hypothyroid, it will cause other problems.

The only other thing I can think of is dandelion tea, it helps with cramps and all, and is a diuretic. I've been drinking peppermint tea, and being that it helps the uterus contract, it's supposed to help it be easier. I don't know if my periods are shorter at this opint because 2 years of birth control changed it, or, if it's because of the tea, but, anything is worth a shot.

Catnip tea also, helps.

But period sex isn't icky. It helps you with your cramps. ^_^

Completely not on topic with the original post...

but what interactions do soy and hypothyroid have together?
oboegoddess 12th-Apr-2007 06:14 pm (UTC)
I've read that soy can suppress thyroid function, so makes hypothyroidism worse.
moonbunni 12th-Apr-2007 06:23 pm (UTC)
Well, it's suspected that it somehow causes the thyroid to slow down even more. http://thyroid.about.com/cs/soyinfo/a/soy.htm talks about it some. (Why do I feel dirty about using a link to that site? D: But it was one of the articles I found )

Basically it's the Isoflavones that are suspected to cause problems. I was simply told by my endocrine doc to avoid soy.
pididdle 12th-Apr-2007 06:45 pm (UTC)

This probably should have been something my doctor told me when I was diagonosed with hypo last year. I drink soy milk like it's going out of style...some good things must come to an end I guess.

i am generally not interested in period sex either, but when i get desperate, i hop in the shower with the boy for easy cleanup. just a suggestion. i'd be really bummed out, too. i don't see my boy much, and the entire week i was home for easter break, i had mine and it didn't stop until the night i got back to college. :\

If you're concerned about the mess during period sex, use an Instead cup. I've done it, and it works well for that. Mind you, don't mistake it for a diaphragm. It doesn't work like that.

If you're saying you have no libido when you're on your period, which the phrasing of your post might imply, I suggest you at least give it a shot. I've found, at least with my husband (we have awesome chemistry) that even if I think I'm "not in the mood" and I start messing around with him anyway, I get in the mood pretty quickly, and it all turns out fine.

Oh, and your icon made my husband and I both LOL.

Everyone has already answered your question, but I wanted to add that period sex is the exact opposite of bad. ;)

Honestly, it is not as messy as you might think. I don't know about other people here, but usually my flow pretty much stops when I'm "turned on" and/or during sex. Plus, something I learned in my Human Sexuality class and read other places: the bloodflow to your vagina is increased during menstruation, so it is more sensitive. That's a good thing.

thank you all for your help!

but my boyfriend and i have only been having sex for a few months, and that he's the first person i've ever had sex with- i'm not sure i'm comfortable enough to have period sex yet.

i guess he's going to have to wait!
elettaria 12th-Apr-2007 11:58 am (UTC)
Get a menstrual cup, that way he doesn't have to go anywhere near the blood. You could either get an Instead, which theoretically can be worn during penetrative sex but has a relatively low satisfaction rate (a lot of women find that they're uncomfortable and/or leak like crazy, though many adore them) or a reusable cup (Divacup, Mooncup, Lunette, Keeper). If you get a reusable cup, it might take a while to get the hang of it, but they're fantastic once you've got past that. You can't have penetrative sex with one in but you can have non-penetrative sex with no blood in evidence whatsoever. The worst that will happen will be that if he puts a finger inside you, he'll encounter the base of the cup (which is often how my boyfriend finds out I'm on my period to start with, I don't always remember to tell him. He pauses for a second, realises and gets back to whatever he was doing). Another option on days when you're not bleeding much is to keep the cup in right until you're about to have sex. If it's a light day, you're unlikely to bleed enough to be noticeable during an hour or so. I know lots of people swear by period sex, but I have enough trouble with blood getting all over the bed when I'm just spotting so I don't want to make the problem worse, and the cup solves the problem beautifully.

You have a pretty short period compared to me (mine last atleast 8 days) but it helps to go to an acupuncturist and get acupuncture a week before your period and have him/her give you herbs. in the past it has shortened mine significantly.
like_marmalade 12th-Apr-2007 06:44 pm (UTC)
Well, I know you've stated your reasons for not wanting to have period sex, and I totally understand and respect why.

But for the future if you ever feel comfortable enough with it, it's not that bad. =P In fact, I usually ENCOURAGE it, because here's my logic: After we're finished, all the blood on his penis, on my thighs, and on the towel is blood that won't have to take forever coming out of me over the next few days! SCORE! (As others have said though, depends on your cycle and sometimes you won't have any mess at all. =P)

Good luck, and I hope you enjoy time with your boy anyway!
truthy7 Pads that can shorten your period26th-Aug-2009 04:50 pm (UTC)
Wow, lots of comments here! Looks like this question -how can I shorten my periods?- is on every woman's mind.

Here's something I have experienced about this: A few months ago I tried a new sanitary pad called Anion Love Moon Sanitary Napkin from Winalite and I experienced a very short and light period. I thought it was a coincidence, but then same thing happened next month. I also heard a friend of mine who used to have long and heavy periods that she's been using the Anion pad and has considerably shortened her period.
nikkilynn_dance To Shorten/Lighten Your Period7th-Sep-2010 07:55 pm (UTC)
My period ever since I got it usually lasts for about 8-10 days, my doctor said since i was a bit of a "late bloomer" (i got my period my freshman year in college) that there was no way to lighten or shorten it. Well this past April I was watching "the doctors" and they said to take Ibuprofen to relieve cramps and to shorten it a day or two. I have been taking Ibuprofen ever since and now its down to 5 days, and the best part is, is that as soon as you take it it starts working, your body does not need to get used to it being short. Ibuprofen is a gift from God :P
abicay shorten you period20th-Oct-2010 10:29 pm (UTC)
What I do is drink tons of water. It sucks because you have to go pee every five minutes. But my period lasts 3-4 days. :-) Worth a try.
rndmintrjection Shortening your period.15th-Mar-2011 07:19 pm (UTC)
Actually....I have to say that you do, to some extent, have control of the length of your period. I have come to discover that both sex and masterbation can ease cramps and shorten the durration of your period. Durring orgasm the uterus swells, and the cervix opens up which allows the fluid to flow more quickly and also nearly obliterates cramps.
deeormama period sex20th-Mar-2013 12:33 am (UTC)
ok well when i met my boyfriend 4yrs ago i was having my period everyday for almost a yr. i did explain it to him and he understood. so first you need to be able to feel comfortable with him. if your not comfortable maybe you shouldnt be having sex at all. my period is normal now and we have been waiting the usual 5 days but let me tell you if your in the mood and both of you are comfortable handle your business and clean up him and the mess. that way he wont get grossed out.

Try to stay away from dairy products and chocolate. I know its hard cuz all we want is chocolate ice cream but find a substitute and it should help a bit.
